I was recently rejected by both USAFA and USNA for the class of 2022. However, I do plan on reapplying. I truly believe I can find great success at an Academy and in the military. As of right now, I am looking at some local community colleges to tune up my academics for a year. Is that a good idea? Or should I be looking for some bigger and more well known schools? I also plan on retaking the ACT once I feel confident that I'll earn a good score (30+). Are there any other recommendations/tips for reapplying to these two schools?

Thank you in advance!

Your best bet is to attend a 4 year college, enroll in AFROTC or NROTC (time to decide), and mimic a freshman course load at the academy.
Retaking the ACT or SAT is a good idea. If for financial or other reasons attending a 4 year college is not practical, then do the best to mimic the courses at a community college. You want to show you can handle the subject material. Keep working on athletics etc as well.

You could also call admissions at the academies and ask where you were deficient or need improvement, etc.

Absolutely contact your admissions counselor and ask if there was anything specific you need to improve on. Take a plebe's courseload in college and knock it out of the park. Aim for at least a 3.5 GPA. Go to office hours and get to know your professor so they can fill out your recommendations if need be. Retake the ACT. Believe it or not, some tricks you learn in calculus can be applied to some math questions on the ACT. Be productive this summer. When it comes time for you to write your personal statement and get interviewed, present a strong case for yourself, articulating how you've improved and what you've learned from this point. Good luck!
