Rejected

Censored....Amazing.. everything is perfect and wonderful!

Good Luck to all.

I don't think the intent was to censor so much as to keep to the original intent of this particular thread. Nor do I think that anyone thinks that the application process is perfect or wonderful, but those topics have been discussed ad nauseum in other threads.

As painful as USNA rejection is, here are a few positive thoughts for those having to move on to a different plan:

- If you (or your DS/DD) were 3Q, you have every reason to be proud of yourself. If you weren't a good student with strong leadership potential, you would have been rejected months ago.
- Many of you now have an option to join a NROTC unit. The good news is that you will take the equivalent Naval Science classes. The other good news is that you will not be standing watch in the Main Office from 0200 to 0400, you will be able to choose how to spend your evenings and weekends, and you will be able to choose whether or not to attend your school's sporting events.
- If you do choose to go all the way through NROTC, you will be able to graduate at the same time as those who will start at USNA this July, and you will have exactly the same rank and Commission.

Best wishes to you all. Thank you for volunteering to serve.

There seem to be so many out there with terrific qualifications yet still received the TWE. I can't help but think how thin the line must have been between you and the ones that received appointments, but the word "microscopic" comes to mind.

This scenario plays out at many excellent universities around the country. I recall reading that Harvard or Yale could admit an entire freshman class of h.s. valedictorians. But they don't.

The fact is that, for schools like the SAs, there will always be great candidates who get TWEs. And, as the parents here know, that scenario plays itself out again and again in life. Not that it makes the process any easier to endure.

Hello everyone. My DS also was rejected although triple qualified, etc. I just learned that all the service academies (except Coast Guard) were told to slash their admitting class in in January 2011 due to budget cuts. That meant that many, if not most fully qualified candidates who would otherwise have been easily admitted this year were not. Only the candidates who received a LOA were accepted (or very few outside of that group). One candidate I know personally spoke to a coach in Feb who wanted her on the sports team and the coach called back almost in tears saying there were no more appointments and their team would go without. Just something to help with the sadness of not getting accepted. I would recommend you contact your MOC to get further information, but I hear it will be worse next year.

momofccandidate: There are usually only a few hundred LOAs (100-200) issued by USNA each year. It seems virtually impossible that the incoming class has been slashed to that extent, as that would mean that a number of Congressional Districts districts would not be allowed a slot. It seems more likely that the incoming class size has been cut substantially, but even a 25% cut in comparison to the previous few years (~1250 each of the past 3 years) would still leave ~900-950 spots in this year's class, far more than the usual number of LOAs, and more than enough for each MOC to fill their slot(s).

This is NOT the case. Period. Due to the economy we have seen a drastic increase in the number of HIGHLY qualified applicants. We've even commented that those offered appointments as few as 5 years ago may not have been picked up during the current and past years application cycles. The application process for all the SAs is even more competitive due to the decrease in the number of slots being allocated to new classes. There has not nor ever will be candidates who are "easily admitted." Each candidate cycle is different from the one before and no comparisons should ever be made.

I just want to go to the Naval Academy and become a United states Marine. I'll do whatever it takes for however long it takes to make that possible. That is all.

I think that trying to figure out who will be offered an appointment and who will receive a TWE is like nailing jello to a wall. The bottom line is that you have given your absolute best in all endeavors and have no regrets. Control the things you can and be proud of your best effort!

Keep the Faith

To those who did not receive their coveted appointment and just recently learned the news - going this deep into the process should encourage you to press on - well same for anyone who did not make the cut for that matter.
Last year my son rode the roller coaster right up until 12 April when he's TWE arrived (3Q with 3 Nom). Also declined on his NROTC app mostly because he did not submit until after Christmas. Sucked the wind right out of his sails.
With a kick in the butt from his local recruiter, he re-applied for a 4-year NROTC scholarship, and submitted by June so he would make the earliest boards. He then attended prep school for a semester (Northwestern) and last October he was awarded a full NROTC scholarship to his #1 choice. He's there this spring taking plebe core classes to get a jump start on his academics. Oh and since it costs absolutely nothing, he re-applied for USNA, 3Q and 2 Nom, still waiting to hear as of today.
Bottom line: from lemons, make lemonade. Another 12 months is a blip in time. The Mission is the Commission, and there are many ways to get there. Good Luck!

Au Contraire - he was extremely offensive. Don't worry he will be back, as will his buddies.

Me three, I was offered a waitlist position for NAPS. Not to toot my own horn, but I am ready to move on. It looks like NROTC at either Purdue or Penn State, where I will take another path to my commision. Thank you everyone for your support, and I wish the best to future applicants.

No TWE in the mail, but I did call and was told that I did not receive an appointment....
