Rejection from USNA 2022

Email. He knew it was going to be tough. High ACTs, good GPA, team captain in two sports, class president, acted, mock UN, but not a recruited athlete and a tough congressional district (had a presidential and congressional nom). Being a military brat hurt as well, changing HS's 3 times and his class rank when he went from a private school with tough grading standards but his GPA was still in the top 10% to a school where it was in the top 25%.

Sounds like my DS as well. Hope is getting thin but he hasn’t gotten the TWE yet.

My DS received the TWE email just now. No offer of prep or any other programs, just no to all for USNA this year. Plan B will be excellent - a good university with a program he wants, and much closer to home (we live over 3000 miles away) so while sad for him, long term I am happy I will get to see him more often! He wants to reapply next year, so we'll see how this upcoming year goes - if he loves Plan B it's possible he could finish out his degree there and apply for OCS afterwards. At least now we know.

NO! HMCoF2021. Thank you.

My DD is CL2020. I don't swing by this site for any practical reason, and I'm sure not here to add some drama to my day. I am here, and I read your post because you, and others like you, remind me that there are still lots of smart, brave, dedicated young people out there (I think thats why you see USNA parents following your stories). Thank you!

Takes courage to "go-around-twice". I don't know if you will choose to apply to USNA again; broaden your options to include USCGA or USMMA; attend a more Std college. Whatever direction you choose I have absolute confidence in your success (ref: Going-Around-Twice).

I'm sure it sounds like "YAda-Ya-Da-yada" to you today. but seriously, you have SOooo much road ahead.

Again, Thanks to you, and to the parents that raised you!

Thank you sir. I actually don't plan on applying to Class of 2023. I'll most likely just continue NROTC for UMBC and graduate Class of 2021. And while I may not be a member of Class of 2022, I will surely enjoy seeing the incoming plebes at Nimitz Library, where I work as a library assistant. If your DD has ever checked out a book, I've probably seen her before. Again, thank you for the encouraging and positive words!

How was he notified? Email? Portal update?

I like how you said it was going to be tough and then tell us he had many things going for him except he wasnt a recurited athlete. He seems like he had a lot going for him

I’m sorry to hear, but that’s an excellent approach moving forward! Best wishes to your DS.

He still does have a great deal going for him, but we also are familiar with the service academies entrance process and know the math. Some districts are very competitive, some are not. If we hadn't PCSed he probably would have stood a greater chance of being a primary nom. Being a recruited athlete gives you an advantage others don't have. I’m not saying any of this is bad, it's part of the process of ensuring your officer corps is top notch and resembles the sailors, Marines and soldiers they lead. You just have to play the hand you are dealt.

At one point in my life I worked as an Atty for Boeing, here in Seattle. I was in my 30s and traveling all over the world supporting Boeing negotiations. Jakarta-Signapore one week, London-DC the next. I remember a couple of times coming home from DC, or Madrid, I'd be stopped at a traffic lights between SEA-TAC and home. I'd rest my head on the steering wheel for just a moment close my eyes and thank my Dad (where ever he was) for bringing his family to such a great place to set down roots.

UW is a great public Universtiy and there is tremendous opportuinity in Seattle, Portland, Boise. ROTC at the UW is a great idea, its a big school in a pretty big town. A group to identify with ,like ROTC, really helps on the social side.

My DD was about 5 mths into her plebe year and happy as a clam. In a phone conversation, kinda out of the blue, she said something very close to this:
"Dad, you know I hate it when you are right, but you were right. If I wasn't here (USNA) the next best choice would have been the UW. I was stupid not to get that"
There was a time when she was weighing USNA vs Ivy's--------- and I was trying to figure out what I could sell.

Good luck to both your girls!-----2018 The Year of the DAWG!

R U guys on the West Coast?
For my DS, it’ll be “The Year of the DAWG!” Go Huskies!

Athletes always have an advantage. That is a given.

The TWE arrived. But, thankfully Plan B is set and it’s at a top ranked university + NROTC. We prayed all along for the right door to open. Plan B is right up there with Plan A. So, I refer to it as Plan A.1.

Blessings to all.
Actually Plan A 2.0

Well yeah, they should. They still have to meet all of the requirements AND they have put in the extra work to excel at a sport. Maybe they tried a little harder...

So UW gets a great student. I win!/UW wins!/State of Washington wins! Just don't expect him to move back to the farm once he's lived in the "Emerald City".

Classes start mid Sept. but you are both expected to watch the Chick Fil-A "Kick Off Game" September 1st: UW vs Auburn.

Must be a tuff day for DS, but he made an exellent "Plan B" call IMO.

Sorry about the TWE. Your DS certainly set up excellent options for next year. His plan A.1 sounds like a fantastic door to have open!

Congrats. my son's girlfriend got on the waitlist for UW., and her email stated that UW got over 45000 applications for 6500 class. It's like 15% acceptance rate this year.

I know it's tough for the kids that receive the TWE. However, they still have options. I have two kids on active duty, and neither went to a service academy. Both went to large state schools. DD went through OCS and is now a SWO; DS went through AFROTC (without ever earning an AFROTC scholarship) and is now a pilot.
Keep the faith.
