Monday I was removed from the AFROTC program at my school. I am devastated. I was not on scholarship, but joined my sophomore year. I have never been reprimanded. I do have a non technical major with a 2.7 gpa. I did not pass the FT the first time and my weight was over 200 pounds. The very next FT I did pass and lost 35 pounds, because I really wanted to succeed. I weigh about 172 pounds now. I did average on the AFOQT, and had plans to retake it this semester and superset my scores. In March, at the beginning of Covid my Commander called and said I did not get selected for Field Training and offered me a 500 Cadet slot. I accepted. Over the summer we got a NEW Commander and he is the one who removed me. He basically said I was not competitive nationally as a 500 Cadet. I am at a loss as to how to move forward. I WANT TO BE AN OFFICER IN THE USAF. As a helicopter pilot. AFTER this semester of college I will have 35 hours remains.
I am thinking I should just graduate (Fall 2021) and then apply for OTS. Thoughts?
Question: I have been register in Wings at my college. If I apply for OTS will my removal from AFROTC follow me? Should I just enlist? I will have a Bachelors Degree (nontechnical) and I am an Eagle Scout. I really want this. When should, or should I talk to an OTS recruiter? I appreciate your advice. I am still shell shocked.

I would slow down a little. It looks like you breathlessly wrote this. You don't need to make a snap decision on anything, especially enlisting.

I would finish college and apply for an officer program in any of the military services that interest you.

If you are only interested in the Air Force, you may be disappointed.

Do you say I will be disappointed because I failed at AFROTC?

No. I would put the word "failed" out of your vocabulary. That's loser talk.

If you only have your sights on the Air Force but have been dropped from AFROTC, you might have a better chance at an officer program in another service. Expand your search and open your mind to other possibilities. My signature line for my work email after my name and titles and whatnot reads "Imagine yourself..." All the services have aviation to include helos. Imagine yourself flying an Apache in the desert or a Seahawk off a Navy destroyer. Now that's some military stuff right there. Also, think about doing a non-flying job.

Just finish college. You are so close. This is not the end of the world.

thank you for your words of wisdom. I will a.waus Steve for excellence.

Like the other posters said. Relax, weigh your options, and don't say or do anything impulsive. This absolutely isn't the end of the road for you if you want to fly. I've got friends from pilot training that quit or were dis-enrolled from AFROTC, then ended up joining the Air National Guard and flying for them. Another friend quit AFROTC, transferred schools, quit Army ROTC and college again, and now flies Blackhawks as an Army Warrant Officer. There are a number of Army and Air Force Reserve and National Guard helicopter units hiring, and you could even enlist with one of those units first and get financial help with college before applying to commission and fly with them. In fact, here's a map if you want to find units based on airframe: https://bogidope.com/squadron-airline-map/

Thank you laying out those options. I guess I have been hyper focused on AFROTC and not exploring other options. I do feel anxious because it happened so unexpectedly and not much time to make changes to schools or college plans (I Just met with my advisor and I only have 30 hours left to graduate After this semester with kinda a lame major and a low GPA 2.7). I think I can get my GPA close to a 2.9 before I graduate. It is stressful making changes this late in the game and so suddenly. I will take your wisdom and try to relax and think this out.

What is your major?

Have you discussed with your current PMS what areas you are weak in? If you want to continue on a path to become an officer, you must look at yourself and make the necessary changes to become a more competitive candidate. Your OP sounded like you’ve been struggling but cleared a couple hurdles. Any officer program is going to expect all standards to be met. Your current PMS can help guide you on where you need to focus on improving as well as some other possible commissioning options that may meet your dream. You need a solid plan with clear goals and objectives to work towards in order to reach that dream.
You can do it! Just take a deep breath, and get back in there with a clear mind.

Thank you for the encouragement. I have changed my major to Exercise Science. Still not a technical major, but it does have a lot of science - 2 biology 2-chemistry 1 physics. I hope this will help some.

Careful with major muscle movements. The AF is very picky about granting second commissioning attempts (from ANY branch). It is also very important to avoid a bad rating on your DD 785.

If ADAF is your goal, 3-4 years as an enlisted member will help you strengthen your OTS package while also paying for your masters degree. It will also give you time to decide if the AF is really for you and/or if you really want to fly.

It’s pretty easy to go from AD to the Reserve Component. The reverse, not so much. Be careful with running to the ANG or USAFR. Their commissioning requirements are the same as AD, and they often have much fewer commissioning opportunities for non-prior folks.

If you enlist, try for an aircraft maintenance, boomer, loadmaster, or AE slot.

But yes, definitely finish your undergrad first.

I’m a prior-E AF officer who went to OTS. PM me if you want some specific guidance.
