Report: PSU disregarded safety and welfare of children/victims

I am sickened by the continued defense of anything P<ervert>SU!!!!!
I have yet to see anyone defending Penn State- at least on this forum. People disagree on what the appropriate punishment for the school is. Pretty big difference. You are welcome to have and express your opinion- don't be confused and think that your opinion, my opinion or anyone else's opinion is the only valid one. On this forum - what people are disagreeeing with is whetehr the NCAA applying the Death Penalty is appropriate or counter productive. That's hardly defending Penn State and their failure to act.

Media is reporting that tomorrow's actions by the NCAA WON'T include the death penalty, but may actually be in some ways worse. HUGE loss in scholarships, multi-year bans from post season play, possible TV bans likely being part of the decision.

We'll just have to see how this plays out. I see a LOT of current football players at Penn state looking into their options in the VERY near future....

60 million in fines, 4 years no Bowl play and 5 years probation.

Don't forget the vacated wins from 1998-2011 and a huge loss in scholarships (20/year).

Bobby Bowden is now the all time leader in wins, again.

I'm glad they're letting athletes transfer without missing a year.

It's a good start in my book....

Honestly I have mixed emotions on this. I grew up a huge PSU fan and being from Pa I hate to see future Penn State hopefuls have to look elsewhere, yet the victims need to know that THEY are more important than any program or any school. PSU will never be looked at in the same light as it once had and that is unfortunate for those that had no part in any of this. Any time the acts of a few represent an institution as a whole it affects so many innocent people adversely. Had PSU received a slap on the wrist it may have been perceived as "we dont' matter" in the minds of the real victims. I think its sends a very clear message to all in charge of such programs.

$60 million is a pretty big deal- it would be nice to see it go to an organization that isn't mostly overhead, so I will be curious to see where it gets directed.

I get the fine, the bowl ban, the scholarship losses, etc. I offer no objection. I also don't care that they took the statue down, and I wouldn't have minded if PSU had to sit out a season or two.

But vacating the wins? Doesn't that just punish the kids who played on those teams?

I dunno....

The whole situation sucks.

Unfortunately, NCAA sanctions almost always hurt players and coaches who weren't around for the original misconduct. NCAA can't reach graduated players or coaches who have retired or fled to the NFL. So, they can only go after the school itself and that, of course, affects those who were "innocent" of the underlying activity.

If there's a better solution, unfortunately no one has yet to come up with it.

Actually, I thought a more appropriate punishment given the crime is to ban all on-campus athletic department contact with prospective football players under the age of 18. No tours of the facilities. No meeting in the coach's office. Not even lunch in the cafeteria. Nada.

Considering the fact that the crime was that they couldn't monitor their coaches in the presence of minors, minors shouldn't be allowed to be in their facilities.

Makes it difficult to recruit when all you can do is email, call and visit the prospect's home. And those emails should explicitly state that this is the NCAA sanction because of their failure to protect minors from abuse.
