My DS is a rising Junior. He is registered to take the SAT for the first time August 29th. Is there any down side to reporting these first SAT scores to schools now? (They let you pick 4 schools to send scores for free.) He anticipates taking the SAT at least twice, and likely three times in total. Should we wait and only have him report only the highest scores he gets? Cost of reporting the scores is not a factor.

Different schools operate in different ways. Some schools, the highest score is automatically inputted into a database and is the only one admissions individuals ever see. Other schools might look at the entire testing history. Will a low first score harm his chances? Probably not, but my recommendation would be to send the free scores to any of the following schools (if he's applying to them) as they're the ones which require a "complete" testing history, and then schools that only require one test to be submitted he can just provide with his highest score.

I would wait to see the scores before sending. While some schools have required reporting complete testing histories in the past, things are changing this year. Lots of schools are not requiring SATs for admission in the upcoming cycle (including Harvard, other ivys, and UC system). Most schools outside of the elite institutions don’t require a complete history and you can just share your best showing (or combination of showings if they super score). Even if schools require a complete test history, you can choose to send them all later.
