Reporting time on I-Day at USNA

From my experience, the reporting time was not a hard time. They give out different reporting times just so they can manage having to process over 1,000 new mids. I had something like a 0730 reporting time and delays at the NMC stadium with buses lead me to not get there until 0800 and it was not a problem.

The morning reporting is usually not a hard time....

The reporting time isn't a hard time ....sure, just saunter up and check in anytime you want..there are a 1000 people all showing up in a few hour window, no one will care .... (100% Sarcasm here...)

The I day process is like a machine. Sure machines break (i.e delay transport from the stadium, etc) and the Detailers have to adjust. That said, woe be to the new Plebe that is the cause of the breakdown. Arriving late could be a learning moment with long lasting implications . (I can imagine some young Plebe telling the Detailer that they were late because Mom/Dad read it on SAF !) Bottom line -- be on time ! If you are early, you may get sucked into the vortex; if you are late- you may start your USNA career as the first example. and its really hard to dig yourself out of the hole once you fall in !

The end of Class of 2022 I-Day ran late by a LONG time, because the Detailers couldn't FIND two of the Plebes after the brief get-together with family.
I mean it was late by at least half an hour (which felt a lot longer than 30 minutes, let me tell you), and the Detailers looked really flummoxed. I simply cannot imagine what those two Plebes were subjected to, after finally turning up.

They were quietly counseled about the importance of timeliness to maintain good order and discipline, perhaps in the "front leaning rest" or "present arms" position (probably not the latter, as I doubt they were issues pieces the first day !). However, more importantly, its not the initial disciplinary action that hurts the most ...it's being identified as a problem child from the git -go. Some people never overcome their initial impression (and that's why they often scramble the Plebes after the first year).

We watched the Detailers off-load the incoming Plebes "gear" (usually backpacks full of stuff that they don't need, that are put in storage until they get them back during Plebe Parents Weekend) and were impressed by one incoming Plebe's "gear pack". It was simply a quart-sized clear ziploc bag with the Plebe's name, company number, platoon number, and squad number on a 3"x5" card, and a cell phone and charger. That was all.

I can tell you, that every Detailer looked at that package in abject reverence, for the Plebe named "A.J. Squared Away".
That Plebe was instantly famous, for all the right reasons.

You can say that again. . .

Yes...we were there waiting to grab a last glimpse of our Plebe walking up Stribling into Bancroft and remember it taking a long while. Now I know why. Lessons learned by all, plebes and detailers alike.

My DD had a 6:30 report time, which was great as she was ready to go. We parked and walked in, very lucky with a spot but we knew we would be leaving after 30-45 min so too early to get a ticket! There was a food tent with drinks and breakfast sandwiches for sale conveniently located next to the line. The detailers would walk up and down the line calling for report times. I was surprised at the number of parents trying to look through the windows!! We ate breakfast in DTA and ran into another plebe and his family having a leisurely breakfast-I was quite nervous if they were checking the time! The picnic was great!

So I am bringing my DS down earlier in the week and we are staying in National Harbor. Is that going to be a nightmare to travel from National harbor to USNA? Map shows about 35-40 minute drive but I was going to adjust that to 1.5 hr drive time.

Traveling the DC Beltway at rush hours (5-9ish) during a week day? Could be 40, could be 120. Even if you are going away from DC/Alexandria, plenty of people commute into MD to Joint Base Andrews, other DOD facilities and other work locations. Once you get to US 50 East, it won’t be bad.

If the check-in time is around 0600, that will be a brutally early start to a taxing and very long day for everyone. If you are in Annapolis, Bowie, Odenton, Annapolis Junction, BWI airport area, you can stay in bed a bit longer and have a chance at breakfast.

National Harbor is a great place to stay, but it’s definitely in the outer orbit. If I stayed there, I’d be on the road before the sun rose and headed to the Double T Diner in Annapolis. 24-hour, for a serious breakfast, and just a few miles from the Stadium parking and shuttle bus.

Or consider National Harbor for your fun days in DC area, but do last night closer in?

Love the Double T Diner & took our Mid there on the way to I-day in 2017. We’ve been back several times.
We were there early and by the time we were done it was packed with families.
The owner/manager asked why so many people were there that early.
Even with only three people working, they got everybody fed & on their way.

They also don’t bat an eye at an order for a patty melt, extra onions, for breakfast.

DS's report time last June was 0700 and we live in DC. We ended up getting an inexpensive room at the Red Roof Inn on Riva Rd the night before. It made for a relatively non-stressful morning with breakfast at Panera and a short car ride to the Yard. Plenty of public parking was available at the Noah Hillman garage for $20 for the day.

Awesome information, thank you all. I took notes. We have enjoyed the Double T Diner there too. I am looking forward to another visit. :)
