Ok so DD has received her appointment to West Point. I have started to take her to the range and discovered she is left eye dominant (right handed). This is not really that much of a problem for pistols but is creating a huge issue for rifles. I am somewhat of a novice and looking for advice on how she should deal with this. It is not practical for her post the stock on her left side as her dexterity is not good enough for that. Really interested in how the Academy will resolve this. Will they raise the sights/scope or expect her to change/ train herself to become right eye dominant.

I wore an eye patch and fired/reloaded a few hundred rounds to help me switch just as a civilian. Lol

My understanding is that a military range master only cares about the dominant eye and will then train your daughter to shoot from that side. They don't care which hand is dominant.

Even if she has always shot right handed, they will re-train her to shoot from the dominant eye side. The general theory being that the dominant eye will be critical in close quarters combat where both eyes are open when aiming her rifle (both eyes open increases perception, field of view and threat assessment ability).

Here is an old thread on the topic:

After barely passing rifle marksmanship in the Navy, I discovered I am left eye dominant (and right handed). I trained myself to shoot the M16 with the left hand in only a few sessions and scored Expert from then on.

This is helpful as I was not sure how the Academy approached this problem. I will have her practice on her left shoulder going forward. She will eventually get more comfortable with it.

Not that I am military, but it's totally a thing, alrighty! I NEVER knew I was, erm, special, in that respect until a friend pointed it out: I used to be a professional photographer and I never even realized that nobody else shot with their left eye!

Best of luck "correcting" this.

I don't know how West Point does it, but USNA the teaching at the range for quals is done by mostly 2/C midshipmen.

Are left-handed rifles ever issued in the military? I've got the same thing --right handed, left eye dominant-- and always get gas and shell casings ejected into my face when shooting right-handed guns.

I'm left eye dominant, right handed. Being as my right eye is very bad, it made no sense for me to aim down an ironsight with it. So when it came to me learning marksmanship during Basic I decided to learn how to shoot with my left. Yes, it's a steep curve but gives you an excuse to begin being ambidextrous.

Some of the M4s in my unit are designed so you can access the selector switch using your left thumb if you're left handed, but that's about it.

My Firstie is right-handed, left-eye dominant. Not sure if he knew that ahead of Beast (was a Boy Scout and did plenty of target practice). It will all work out. One plus was that it was easier to find my kid in pictures posted during Beast because his rifle was slung across the opposite shoulder of everyone else in his group.

I am right-handed and left eye dominant and naturally shoot left handed. I do everything else right handed. I think it will be much easier (and more accurate) to learn to shoot left-handed than try to train your right eye to be dominant and shoot right-handed. Just my two cents. Amazing there are so many of us on here...

I am right handed and left eye dominant. I went shooting for the first time a few weeks ago. My instructor recommended I shoot lefty. I made the decision to go righty because my right eye is slightly better. I hit bullseye with my first shot (however, it wasn’t where I was aiming...). After missing a few more shots I switched hands and eyes. I saw a dramatic change. Pulling the trigger with my left hand was funny at first but I adjusted after about 50 rounds.
