Roller coaster I: Get Us (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘26 🎢

As a parent, my concern is that the '26 Herndon climb is 16 hours after sea trials (bruises, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, cuts, scrapes). Previous climbs were 6 days after trials which gave the plebes time to recover. I understand the concept of being hardcore and let's not go there. I'm spec ops for 25 years out of 30. I just don't want to see my DS get injured which will surely upsets DW.
And yes, the world remembers till time immemorial.
My firstie and his 3 friends were discussing w my plebe. Their take was that hopefully ’26 works smarter and not harder. They thought many may take a more passive role as a result of recovery process. Maybe it will lead to a more organized climb with an executed plan? We shall see…

Plebes can think of it as good training for the many things in life they will find himself doing that they are less then enthused about.

They can choose to re-frame this as not being ‘mandatory fun,” climbing a greased monument in some traditional rite of passage, but a way for then to not think about themselves and support and cheer on classmates after a challenging year, and be part of the larger team that gets it done.
So true! My firstie was strongly in camp Never Herndon when ‘23s Reform Herndon was announced. Ultimately he participated in the active scrum for an hour at the base and was both happy he participated and his class conquered! Prevailing Monday morning QB opinion was that USNA leadership made the right call by slowly righting all of the covid lost opportunities.

Grades are mostly in. Dude is not too happy with his Company ranking even though he supposedly was improved per the write up. So, got a "C" for that, which means no Dean's or Dants list this time, even though his GPA will probably be good enough.

But we did have a nice weekend with him home. Looking forward to driving over Wednesday for Herndon. Should be perfect weather for it! Our shirts didn't get shipped until late, so have to pick them up from the family that organized the order. No biggie for us since we'll be there.

Sea Trials tonight!!

We are here in Nap Town the Yard is quiet. Plebes having an early dinner and early to bed. 0230 muster is brutal!

Thinking 60 degree 8am start, getting hosed down may be chilly 🥶🥶🥶

I did the entire Ironman Lake Placid with temps in the upper 60's and raining the whole time, and my first Boston was one of the only times in history it was almost cancelled. Upper 40's/low 50's, wind, and rain. And I was in my mid to late 30's for age.

The 18 - 21 year olds can handle a few hours (mostly standing around). Suck it up, buttercup!! :p

Suppose this is the last gasp as we rode the rollercoaster successfully! Thanks all for contributing, following, laughing, and crying along with the rest of us.

I'll be sticking around, don't worry. Just no need to post much in this one anymore. I look forward to following the '27 roller coaster!!. ;)

Time flew by. Feels like it was last week dropping off for IDAY. Looking forward to the next 🎢 of Youngster Year!

My kid was already unknowingly doing the "my Plebe year was the last hard one," when he was grousing about how the '27 Plebes will only have two workouts a week, and their ProKnow will be take home and open notes. Not sure if that was 28th co. guidance, or if it is Brigade-wide.

Met with the peeps from 22nd Co. where he'll be going, said it was interesting. He's looking forward to the summer stuff. We're going down to see the Blue Angels on the Yard on Wednesday. Should be a perfect day for it!

I asked my Ensign if there were any on his ship. Bc how full circle would that be??

Nope. None. Maybe later this summer.

My kid is 3rd block in San Diego. Doing stuff on the Yard to prep for his YP cruise right now. 2nd block leave.

DS is PROTRAMID 1st block and YP cruise 2nd. He had an awesome experience on subs. I have to say -- scary doesn't cut it for me - but it was amazing and exhilarating for him. He loved the culture of it. Said he was so excited he didn't sleep for the 2 days they were out. :jump1: He is now doing aviation I think.
