Roller coaster II: Get Me (The Parent) Through Plebe Year Class of ‘25 🎢

One more helpful hint ... don't let Upperclass goad you into doing something you wouldn't do yourself.

I'm guessing that the "wildman" --attacking "deserving" upperclass with messy King Hall products, then running like H#ll is a thing of the past. In the day, a Plebe might get carry on for conducting said assault and making it back to their room before the victim catches them. Most of these attacks were triggered by Upperclass daring and goading the Plebe who didn't know better.

Of course, their is always the Upperclass who leads from the front and participates in Recons along with his /her Plebes. I've heard stories of Plebe Detailers who took their Plebes on tours of the Ho Chi Minh trail (the series of steam pipes that run underground through the Yard). I'm guessing that would be frowned upon now as well..

I will neither confirm nor deny the existence of the Ho Chi Minh trail itself, the presence of tunnels with the pipes or that it goes all the way across the yard. . .

Before they cut off the steam, the greener patches and misty mini-clouds above certain parts of Worden Field were dead giveaways.

Quote from my DS on antics: I came here to learn to be an officer, not how to pull a good prank.

He is hoping to stay above the fray but will defend his shipmates.

My DS is also not a big fan of the nonsensical- I have to remind him often to not take things too seriously when they do not warrant it. That being said, I have also encouraged him to embrace activities that build esprit de corps, including well thought out spirit week shenanigans that push the envelope and stay within ROE. Unfortunately, well thought out too easily goes to the way side. Case in point- during Marshall the plebes are challenged to nab upperclassmen shoulder boards, unfortunately that turns into ripping them off in such a way it damaged uniforms, and also plebes stealing other plebes shoulder boards (which makes no sense- i.e. look at me, Plebe Joe, I have another plebes shoulder boards- flex- NOT).

I have pictures of some "Unknown" Plebes on the Ho Chi Minh trail on a Slurpee run:D

A good part of leadership is fun, good humor and the ability to launch at yourself. A good part of teamwork is esprit des corps built through having (good-natured, legal, ethical) fun at each other’s expense. Yes, the stuff gets a bit wacky and crazy at times (DD the firsty spent an hour last night searching for her stolen mattress, eventually finding it in a gym) but it makes for great stories and spirit. And what’s college without that?

Meant to say: “…the ability to LAUGH at yourself.”

And after that faux pas, I’m going to launch — I mean, laugh — at myself. 🙄

DS reported that while AF week was crazy he did say it was fun and also participated in a few, low risk extra activities.

Additionally, he sent a selfie this morning with him wearing 2 stripes. Apparently he won a bet from a Firstie at breakfast. The bet was if DS could eat 20 sausage links, which if you saw my DS who is a rail you would think it was a safe bet for the Firstie, however DS summarily put down the 20 links. I am sure he will pay digestively later but enjoying the honorary title so far.

Overall glad to hear he is partaking in a few extra activities.

DS got a good lesson in adulting this weekend after his phone screen mysteriously broke on Friday. Bear in mind as an OG, I gave him the "oh well, deal with it speech" and be be prepared to be without it as it gets fixed. He then he calmly explained all comms are done through email or texts. Given he cannot be walking all over the place with his laptop out he would be severely hampered.

Luckily Saturday was Town Liberty so he arranged for his Sponsor family (yeah!!) to pick him up after lunch and take him to the nearest store to get options. I warned him that he may have to wait awhile and that he will need to calmly explain to sales person that he needs to walk out with a working phone as his next opportunity would be a week away. After the salesperson took 30 minutes to figure out the phone was not under warranty and did not have insurance (DS told him this from the start), DS was told repair could only be done by a third party. DS called me for advice, I advised to buy a new one and we talked through his options. 45 minutes he called back saying he was still in the store as the sales person could not figure out how to sell him the phone. Again advised DS to just put on my CC and he could pay me back. Within 15 minutes, DS was walking out of the store with new phone in hand. Needless to say, DS was relieved but "tired" after having to deal with this "emergency" on his first Saturday "off" in three weeks. I said welcome to adulthood.

Those third party repair places do a good job for about $100. Doesn’t take that long.

Similar situation happened to my DS in the spring, luckily after semester ended so he had a bit more freedom.
His choice was to keep spending money to hopefully repair a phone still on a payment plan, or buy a lower quality one that gets him through.

I did feel somewhat sorry for his inability to just "go to the store" without major inconvenience to saint sponsor and others, but was secretly glad he had to start doing this kind of normal adult crap to see what it is about.

Yeah I researched that option and found the closest place is in Bowie. Given the reliance on last minute sponsor ride I did not want to inconvenience them with that ask. However we will be fixing the old one, and then he has a backup.

The annapolis mall has a repair shop (google says it opens soon, so I assume it is still in business).

In case you didn’t know, military gets a discount on Apple products.

Actually, they get discounts on a lot of things, a lot of stores! Comes in handy when your lawn mower breaks down and your Mid is home on leave 😬
