Roller coaster II: Get Me (The Parent) Through Plebe Year Class of ‘25 🎢

"Next semesters class schedule lighter than he wanted so he is hoping some openings occur during the summer. The downfall of making an assumption and being ahead of normal 3/C due to validations."

Do you mind elaborating on what you mean by that?
He is scheduled for 15-16 credit hours but wanted to be closer to 18-19. There are two 3C classes that are mando (navigation and leadership). He wanted to have one first semester and one second however he missed getting registered---I think he thought it would automagically happen. Second he wanted to roll tight into his last math class (Stats) but upperclass get priority. He could have taken Diff Eq but as Group 3 major he politely declined. So first semester will be heavy major content and second semester will be higher non-major content.

He said he will make it work. Just means he may have a little more time for some ECAs he has not been able to try out i.e. YP weekend cruise.

DS did Diff EQ over summer last year, loved it. Hard and fast-paced but all focus on one course so it was doable. Pulled an A, had lots of time with classmates in DTA and on the yard.

Just amazing! . Company dining out completed. Plebe Company screener (mini Sea trials) conducted for last SMT which means he can "spoon" his Firsties. 3 days of Plebe Academic classes. 21 days til Herndon!

DS is super optimistic about the next steps. Looking at a lower QPR this semester driven by Calc 3 (vectors) but will still be respectable. He is looking forward to summer training, joining a new company and NOT BEING A PLEBE.

Looking back over the last 4 years, and 2yrs, this period of the 47 months was for sure a highlight. Perhaps top 3. So much to look forward to. The grind of plebe year JUST about over. Experiencing a really neat dining out tradition. Attending commissioning and supporting those that ARE DONE and headed to their next adventures. Registering for next classes. Receiving summer trainings (PROTRAMID!!!)…..all for the first time! And PLEBES NO MORE!

It’s an amazing time 💯!! Congrats!

And coming out of plebe year, they’ll be officially done with 2/3 of the USNA experience. (The first 1/3 being plebe summer, the second 1/3 being plebe ac year.)

I was skeptical when I heard about this, and about the last three years being the final 1/3. In fact, that’s exactly how it felt. From the start of youngster year to now, less than four weeks from commissioning, it literally felt shorter than plebe summer! Crazy — so embrace it and enjoy it before you blink and it’s over.

I second this 🙋‍♀️! It’s true. And these last few weeks are FLYING by. Even faster and faster. Crazy.

Had a great time with DD last weekend. Her summers are full..

Zero block: selected for some special leadership training.
1st block: STEM detailer
2nd block: 2 classes, she does not wants those classes in ack year.
3rd block : PORTRAMID
Meet parents: just before heading to PORTRAMiD.

Plus catch up on some physical standards she needs improvement on during summers.

Cheering for her success in achieving her objectives.

So what to call the next thread Post-Herndon?

"Roller coaster III: Get Me (The Parent) Through the last three years for Class of ‘25"

Or perhaps we let the Class of '26 have there own and we now become the mentors? Wow not sure I am ready for that responsibility. Maybe once I hit the 2yr mark and 1000 messages?

Sea Trials will be "super fun" as my DS says (and he means it). He did not get to do in person sea trials as a plebe but was a squad leader for it last year and company XO this year - he really likes it, says its very worthwhile, and it is something the Plebes should be looking forward to.

DS is looking forward to it. His company did a "mini" sea trials this past weekend as a screener to be officially named as a Company member. The advice his Detailers have given is that Sea Trials won't be anything new-Running, E course, O course, logs, boats, sand babies, wet and sandy, etc-- it will just be a longer version of their Morning PT and SMT's. And it will the whole Brigade of Plebes not just his company.

Wondering if your MID and ours are in the same company! DD company also did their mini sea trials past weekend, over 9 miles running, logs etc etc. DD showed bruises all over her arms, legs when we met her last Saturday.

Parent Perspective: Honestly, the next two years are relatively quiet! Most things are ‘old hat’. Stuff isn’t all new like plebe year. So it’s not as newsworthy. Your Mid is more confident and continue to gain independence FROM mom and dad. Kind of the “ahhhhhh” years.

Firstie year, second semester, Ramps back up a bit again with things new surrounding commissioning. But still you are along for their ride. If they let you. They are driving the ship!! It’s pretty sweet. They are ready to fly, and mom and dad feel it!

Every question i’ve had for mine, is the same. Answer ‘I’ve got that. Or It’s taken care of. Or Done’. Music to my ears. They are READY!!

^ This must be from the Parent perspective .... IMHO, and looking back 40 years, Plebe Year flew by -- you really expect Plebe year to suck, and it times it does, but for me, Plebe Year and First Class year seem to go by the fastest, and Youngster Year /Second Class year were long hard slogs through academics, and even harder for my classmates who were engineers in a time where it seemed like the Professors were out to kill you.

Second semester First Class Year was probably the best -- at some point we got town liberty after Classes and really had most of the freedom that a regular college student had. Even then, there was that little devil sitting on your shoulder, whispering don't screw it up...we are this close.. There is a reason that Midshipman throw their hats at graduation -- it is like lifting a 1 ton weight off your shoulders (and then it all gets added back when you get to the Fleet !)

My 2C has town liberty most weeknights. I also thought only Firsties second semester get town liberty on weeknights. Has something changed?

Second class has town liberty on weeknights ? What is the world coming to?
Yes, something has certainly changed !
Unless they are on restriction! My grandfather must be railing from heaven. He couldn’t imagine a world where this was true.

Funniest line I heard come out of COVID, when a part of the Brigade was staying in St John's -- Mid's have been trying to get over the wall forever, and now they are lettting them live there !
