Roller coaster III: Get Me (The Parent) Through 3/C Year Class of ‘25

DS just texted that he has been loading supplies onto YP's all morning in prep for cruise tomorrow. He was complaining because he and only few others volunteered for the duty and everyone else was given the day off. I told him it was his fault for VOLUNTEERING :)

Lesson learned.

NAVY = Never Again Volunteer Yourself
Funny....DS texted this exact same thing moments after I pointed out HIS mistake of volunteering. He did call later in the day and when I chided him about volunteering he had a rational explanation to volunteer: duty would be physical and after three days of non stop inside briefs he was ready to burn some energy outdoors; the task was supposed to be shorter than the indoor briefing sessions, tasks would be well organize and run like clockwork.

However after 4+ hours and plenty of SNAFU's he realized that the grass is not greener on the other side of the Severn.

I know DS will get the specs but as he is off on YP cruise and generally not available, any insight into when 3/C has to report back to Yard post Block 3 leave? Block 3 ends on Wednesday Aug 17th and Brigade reform (HellO night) is Aug 19th. Just trying to plan, while embracing Semper Gumby, what his return to the Yard will look like.

A two day window is pretty informative!! More than a normal guess!!

I'm going to take a wild guess on this one but getting off of a YP in Annapolis on the 17th with report back on the 19th leads me to expect that they'll be assigned rooms at USNA, possibly (hopefully) their academic year rooms and then have town liberty until the assigned hour on the 19th.

I have heard the 18th from my girl who is also on YP cruise. But she heard that before she left.

Pretty sure they meant MIDN is currently on YP for Block 2 and unavailable to answer, while Block 3 is leave. So, they're wondering when they need to help facilitate travel back to Yard.
Obvious answer is that MIDN should know and should manage own travel, of course.
I would book it for the 17, fairly early just in case? and be prepared to change asap once contacted by MIDN.

This is one scenario I LOVE the new flight change policies. American allows multiple flights to be booked with points, and then canceled no penalty up to flight time. I can book 2-3 and cancel once confirmed not needed.

Yes sorry you are right..DS currently on YP cruise for Block 2. 100% agree that MIDN can manage travel, but when I am his "UBER" driver back to the Yard after Block 3, I was just looking for some guidance ahead of time. DS was making inquiries prior to Block 2 cruise departure but did not have a straight forward answer.

So I'm a 26 mom, but DS and I had funny convo yesterday. He just embarked on an offshore sailing trip. When he returns, he gets a day or so then (assuming orders stand as it) he will report for a sub cruise. He booked his travel home based on the stated return date from sub cruise. We both know all dates are up for change.

I asked him, what happens if your cruise gets extended? I won't be able to communicate with him, he won't be able to tell me or the airline that he won't make his flight.

I also don't want to drive 180 miles one way to get him at the airport, only to find he isn't there.

He has a great plan. "Mom, if you don't hear from me the night before my flight, don't drive to get me, and please call AA and let them know I am somewhere, doing something, on submarine XXXX and won't be making my flight". Cracks me up.

NAVY = Never Again Volunteer Yourself
I do get the humor in this and I suppose it can be true in some instances. At the same time, the entire trajectory of my career goes back to being a scared junior enlisted kid who raised his hand to volunteer when my Chief said "I need a volunteer and the job is going to suck." It isn't like I shot my hand up either -- I hesitated and then slowly raised it. There's a line of influential causality from that moment to where I am today. :)

The lesson? Sometimes it works out, other times you just get dumped on.

...he will report for a sub cruise...

...Please call AA and let them know I am somewhere, doing something, on submarine XXXX and won't be making my flight"...

The best part about getting back from a sub cruise is when the TSA asks him something like; "So where are you coming from?" and he gets to say "That's classified". ;)
