....and we are off. DS arrived at first Block 1 training post after long bus ride with no stops, no food and generally unhappy. I told him welcome to the Fleet! He is excited to be off the Yard and doing something. The last few weeks during intercessional and Block 0 were long. He thought he stood in more lines during Commissioning week than all of PS.

DW is tackling the mountain of disgusting clothes DS sent home with us. She is desperately trying to get white clothes back to looking white and being fairly successful. Funny thing...DS called after Commissioning to get help on washing his Summer whites as Brigade laundry was shut down and he had not done his own laundry the entire year.

Too funny. We had 5 new 3/c cycling though the house over the weekend. Think locusts when it comes to refrigerator and pantry - mix of sponsor mids and tagalongs.

I held Laundry 101: A Study in Summer Whites in the laundry room. Pre-treat. Don’t forget the belt, and remove the buckle. Add Oxyclean. Don’t wash with anything else, even other whites. Soak cycle. Warm water. Medium dryer, 30-40 minutes. Hang up immediately. Best way to preserve desired laundry-pressed creases. Zip up pants zipper before washing to prevent zipper from “picking” knit material. No “regular” bleach, will eventually yellow anything 100% polyester.

White shoes: in addition to shoe polish, a tube of white (not blue gel) Arm & Hammer Baking Soda toothpaste. Moisten a washcloth, squeeze out some toothpaste, and gently rub out dark scuff marks. Works on white vinyl cap covers too.

I won’t do their laundry for them, as they are grown people who need to take of their own laundry but am happy to share years of accumulated gouge.

Got a sneak peek of Class of 2026 plebe summer schedule. Saw that in Week 4, right after plebes get their summer whites, the eminent @Capt MJ will be conducting a seminar titled “Keeping Your Whites White.” 🤗🤣😉

@Capt MJ, you simply must write a book! Or launch a series of YT videos!

Thank you!
My 3/c son is home from University so I showed him this. He asked me to copy and email this to him. He has been responsible for doing his own laundry since 7th grade. He is not fond of his summer whites.

I just printed and will be putting with the "Mound" of USNA stuff currently re-siding in our dining room.

I still cannot get over the amount of uniform gear he has acquired. Show up to I-Day with nothing but a cinch sack and the clothes on your back. We brought home a minivan of stuff, which does not include the Sea bag of summer training gear which DS kept, nor the stuff in the USNA "locker" nor the stuff offloaded last minute to DTA local.

DS had finished all snacks the days before in prep for the travel. Las night he did locate the local PX (?) for some snacks as well as a towel as he forgot to keep one.

This right here is why Capt MJ averages about 1400 (or whatever the average class size is) sponsor parent requests each year. Legend!

:)

DD back from an extended weekend at her sponsors with 4 of her company mates. Incredibly thankful for sponsors - they are like the glue that keeps them together at times. Received a pic of our DD on Day 1 of Block 1 - Summer STEM on the yard. Here's to new adventures!

PROTRAMID Week 1 in the books. DS is now in Norfolk for two weeks. He is looking forward to all the activities this week on Surface ships as right now that is his preferred path.

He was excited when he called home as he had his OWN room at a "hotel" on the base! He thought he had won the lottery. I realized the last time he had his own space was during this past Christmas break at home.

Marine's last week did not change his mind on where they sit in his preferences. Had some highs but too many "lows" to move them up his "list."

yes my DD was so excited about her own room!! she sent us the funny text saying God Bless USNA! then she gets to her room and the AC is broken - ha!! She is still happy! DD is the same on marine week! she was glad that is behind her!

Good report. This is exactly what summer is all about, seeing what fits and doesn’t fit.

We had a rugby-playing sponsor mid who was completely leaning toward Marines for a few years straight, attended Leatherneck, did well, but realized they didn’t feel right. Happily went SWO-Meteorlogical path, got out at 8 years, is now a career ABC agency senior agent with some unique specialty expertise. They are always amazed at how their life journey has rolled out.

When my DD came home from college I put all of her stuff in her bedroom so it wouldn't stay in the dining room all summer.

My mom would have put it all on the bed and decreed it also couldn’t be lump-stowed into a corner, closet or on the floor without Something Being Done, accompanied by The Look.

DW is working through the mound. Clean clothes and non-clothing items have been moved to DS room. We have just a few more items to wash and then get the dry clean only stuff out for cleaning. However we did find a pair of summer white pants freshly dry cleaned by Brigade laundry with a note that says they could not get the stain out of the seat of his pants! DW will work her magic as well as @Capt MJ advice.

I am all about Oxyclean powder soaks in warm water, and Arm & Hammer baking soda and peroxide white toothpaste with a soft damp toothbrush for stained uniform items.

If it’s an ink stain, try some alcohol-based clear hairspray to essentially dry-clean it. The alcohol usually dissolves the ink, blot, re-apply, blot, until it looks like you can go to the method above.

You know how you can tell Navy people out of uniform? They always check wherever they are sitting down in a public place and usually sneak in a wipe with a napkin.

A/C was broken in the room my DS had last year too! :D
