Rollercoaster Round 2

nge2457 feel the same. DS has a classmate that is there today..they started the process together and was hoping that they would finish it together today by becoming Plebes together but it was not meant to be and my DS is reapplying for Class of 2020 as well. My best to the Class of 2019!

Same here NavyMom, looking out for pictures of one of my best friends! Hopefully we'll all be there this time next year!

Hang in there all you second-timers- my DS (a second-timer) is now in Class of 2019- 1/3 of his platoon is NAPS, College NROTC (my son) or prior enlisted.

USNAcohopeful19- congrats on the scores- next goal is to do as well as you can in those fall semester classes- I think that is what made the difference for my son who was an ME major.

Best of luck to you this coming year!

Someone reapplying from a 4 year college, participating in NROTC and taking a similar 4/c navy course load, what would you say is best for recommendation letters? I could still get high school recs and college recs but im not sure which would be best. In regards for nominations too.

I can't speak with authority on this but will report on my DS experience- he asked for LOR from his senior class teachers (HS) who were different from his initial application with regard to math and english- He did not ask for recommendations from his college professors (USNA did not ask for them only grades). Positives for HS recs are- teachers know you well- you can ask them for LOR and ensure that they are in with your completed application prior to leaving for college. Then you have one less thing to distract you over the fall from getting the best possible grades you can!

The USNA wanted his fall semester grades as soon as they were available and it seems to me that MUCH depended on them.

He obtained his nomination from our congressman, and did not ask for a LOR from the NROTC commandant, but this would definitely be an additional source for a nomination that would be worth pursuing IMO.

Thank you. As for the nomination, what kind of things did he do differently or the same applying through his congressman?

I think one thing (and this will seem funny to you now in July) was the fact that he came back at all. I can't remember the statistics in this regard, but a very large number of re-applicants start their application to USNA for the following year- but do not finish it or follow through because they are happy in college- and that is OK. My son was happy at first too- but then decided he wanted a more military environment. Perseverance counts and I think the congressman took this into account. Also, the fact that he elected to do ROTC as a college programmer helped as well with his nominating source. He had finished his year strong as a senior- academically- so that his overall grades and GPA were better. I think that this mattered for his nomination too.

For the USNA- I think my son's fall semester grades as a ME mattered (I think his GPA was 3.87); he made the Dean's List which probably his best academic year ever which showed continued commitment and an upward trajectory.

I hope that helps!

Your USNA recommendations MUST be the English and Math teachers (12th grade) or college professors. If any LORs are required by your MOC, they will let you know what (if any) their requirements are.

Sometimes the LT or Marine Capt might provide an even better recommendation, as they have personally witnessed your work ethic/character/leadership on a day-to-day basis and can speak to it. They will probably end up writing it in either case.

How does one go about re submitting their DoDMERB exam to admissions/the application since it is good for one full year?

My recollection is that DoDMERB and any waivers are good for TWO years. Stay on top of that. DS was disqualified and received waiver for Class of 2018. He received an LOA for Class of 2019 conditioned on resolution of the DoDMERB disqualification, but once the waiver paperwork caught up with the LOA, he received an appointment to Class of 2019. I don't really know how the paperwork moves within DoDMERB, but it's something to follow if you can. The people who answer the phones there are very helpful!

Regarding LORs, my son was an engineering major and did not take a college English class. This worried me a bit. He had his high school senior year English teacher write the English LOR. One of his college professors wrote the other LOR. Regarding nominations, he pretty much did the same thing he did the year before. Scheduling interviews is a little tricky if you are at college out of town, but the staffs of the offices to which he applied were flexible, which I imagine is usually the case, especially for reapplicants who received nominations the year before. They will probably remember you if staff has not changed.

My son did not share the essay (or whatever you call it) he submitted with his second application, but I know he waited until the last possible moment to write it. Admissions won't look at your file until they have your first semester grades (we were told). So he submitted his essay over Winter break. That way, he had the benefit of a bit more maturity and self-awareness, the experience of a semester of college, and what he learned at NROTC first semester.

Key to this process is: do not be discouraged that you didn't make it the first time! My Plebe was very discouraged, but a year of college made him a better Plebe than he would have been a year ago. I also think it is helping his resolve to muscle through Plebe Summer challenges, which we are learning are significant. And those who are ROTC will report to I Day with an ability to help your fellow Plebes with some of the military specific tasks associated with being a Plebe. Wishing you all the best!

Ahh, the second time. The roller coaster doesn't feel any different - even when you know the "hills & valleys."

Best of luck to all of you!

Dedication is something all the SAs like to see. Stick with it!

Does anybody know how last years Dodmerb results get to this years portal? DS has requested I ask. Cannot find answer on USNA or Dodmerb site. No clue what to do.

Should be automatic when 40% of the app is complete and they send the info to DODMERB requesting the eval. The candidates I work with (BGO) didn't have to take any action.
