Room and Board

Anyone know if vermont pays room and board or Penn state for army ROTC?
UVM AROTC Scholarships cover full room and board, including a stipend if you move off campus as an upperclassman. We visited recently (August 2019) and asked this very question.

Great to know. It’s relieving to have an all expenses paid option!

Just a few thoughts on room and board from Army side. My DS won a 3 year and some schools do offer a credit for housing. Also, every school that we have talked to has allowed him to take his merit scholarship and apply it to years 2-4 and use it to pay for room and board. We have confirmed this not only with the ROOs but also with the finance office at each of the schools. I know that all schools are different so call them and find out. Where this does not work is when you don't receive a merit award.

Are R&B discounts typically only offered to students receiving an ROTC scholarship? Or is it offered to those paying their own way? Our student is a strong student/high scores/grades etc. but does not plan to study one of the "high demand" stem or language majors, therefore probably won't receive an ROTC scholarship. So does that mean R&B discounts are out? Or just more unlikely/rare? TIA

"High Demand" Stem majors are important for Air Force and Navy Scholarships. Much less important for Army and NROTC-MO. There are many schools that offer R&B discounts to ROTC scholarship recipients. As far as receiving aid for R&B if you are not on ROTC Scholarship, that is highly dependent on financial need and the specific school. Don't give up on a scholarship just because you are not planning on being a STEM major. The military is full of officers without stem degrees.

Thank you. Our student is considering AFROTC and while pretty good in STEM, not sure they are ready for a lifelong commitment to it. There are other areas where they really seem to excel i.e. finance. I understand that ROTC scholarships are very competitive, but paying full price for tuition and R&B will definitely shorten the list. Thanks again.

This site is a great resource. Take some time and have your DS/DD research the different branches as well as the career opportunities for each. AF seems to be heavily weighted to Tier 1 degrees. Navy is the same way, but both Navy and AF award scholarships to non-stem majors. Take a hard look at AROTC. The Army awards more scholarship than any other branch. They are also not as focused on Stem majors like the Air Force and Navy.

Our DS received a Type 2 Non-Tech 4 year scholarship and will be able to use it for an Aviation/Aeronautical Science degree. Another thread regarding the AFROTC scholarship winners for 2020 posted that less than 200 Type 1 (these are Tech/STEM only), 300 Type 2 (can be Tech or Non-Tech) and over 1000 Type 3 (also apparently can be Tech or Non-Tech) were awarded. While they do heavily pursue the Tech degree candidates, a solid candidate that is looking at the Non-Tech path can get a very good scholarship out of it.

Be sure to look into schools which offer merit based scholarships based on ACT / SAT scores! I received a type 1 AFROTC scholarship, and a school I applied to provides a $15,000 merit scholarship for ACT scores above a 31. I contacted them and they will allow that scholarship to go towards room and board since I have tuition covered. Most schools only allow their scholarships to cover tuition, however it doesn't hurt to contact schools and check! I now have a full ride plus living stipends, and a guaranteed job serving my country with an incredible team upon graduation. About two weeks ago, I thought that I would be taking on around 100K in debt over these next 4 years. This also means my savings can be used for flight lessons before I graduate high school or go towards a vehicle. What an incredible opportunity thanks to the Air Force and the colleges scholarships!
Where are you going to school? My son is going to WVU they accept type 7 out out staters and have scholarships avail for room and board and his merit scholarships can be used for costs. Pretty exciting

I will be attending Cedarville University in Ohio, it’s a crosstown with Wright State University cool to hear he has a similar situation!

Pleased to learn Miami University allows their academic scholarships to be used for room and board in conjunction with AFROTC and NROTC scholarships. The school is very expensive (52 K with room and board) but they are very generous with the academic/merit scholarships. Assuming most all NROTC and AFROTC scholarship recipients are very strong academically, I think it’s an option recipients should look at.

My son was accepted and with his NROTC scholarship and the merit scholarship offered there is $0 out of pocket.

Was pleased to learn that the University of Richmond has a local scholarship ( Satterwhite Memorial Scholarship ) specifically for ROTC cadets. The portion of the scholarship allocated to DS covers approximately half room and board. Not bad when combined with 4-year national scholarship.
Make sure to turn over every stone!

I feel kinda stupid to ask, but why would a College/University offer free room and board to ROTC Scholarship students?

An additional enticement to someone who is on a "full tuition" scholarship. That's the big bucks. Of course I expect there are other reasons as well. SMCs are obviously military oriented. Others are very proud of their xROTC units and want to keep their tradition going, etc.

Thanks, kinnen.

So... do schools offer free room and board for other scholarship students? I know little about such things. I "struck" QM in the USCG and then in the USMM was a "hausepiper" and worked my way up to Master. School was something to be avoided...

You can go to the individual ROTC home pages (AROTC, NROTC, AFROTC) and they have a listing of the additional enhancements that each school offers.

Here is the AROTC link - look in the left column and you will see a drop down menu with schools

Here is NROTC

I can't speak to other scholarships but AD and retired military are offered deals all the time, from lift tickets, to amusement parks, to national park fees.

In some cases, it's a result of the school's commitment to being considered military friendly. I know in the case of Syracuse (where DD will be a MSII this year), SU was named the #1 private school for veterans by Military Times, and it is also the location of the National Veterans Resource Center.

SU even waives freshman year tuition for 3 year scholarship winners for both AROTC and AFROTC.
