Room and Board

Good evening,
I received my NROTC scholarship today but was a little confused by the technicalities of what it covered. The message says it will cover "tuition and required fees OR room and board (limited to a maximum of $11,500 per academic year or the cost of living on campus, whichever is LESS)." How is it decided what the scholarship will cover?
Thank you and best of luck to everyone else applying!
Pretty sure you decide which one it covers. Choose the option that’s more expensive so you get more bang for your buck

Creighton University covers R&B as well as tuition.

You decide. You pick either tuition and fees OR room and board.

JMU only pays for the first year. Creighton pays for R&B. Norwich has scholarships to pay for it. Most do not.

If you are awarded the 4 year national scholarship, you need to decide if you want that scholarship to apply to tuition/fees or room/board - the Army scholarship does not cover both. However, if you choose to have it cover tuition/fees, some universities will award scholarship recipients free room/board (it comes from the school, not the Army). So, in that case the student has a full ride. The University of Vermont does this for my daughter.

VMI is still covering room and board for scholarship recipients. We told them my son was awarded a scholarship, and they very quickly updated his financial aid package to show that he was awarder their "Call to Duty" scholarship.

The Citadel webpage states that their National Service Scholarship will cover "up to full room and board". I contacted their financial aid office, they say they would not be able to provide a confirmation of the amount until around March 15.

If it stays like it has been at The Citadel, only ROTC scholarship students eligible for a federal Pell Grant receive full room and board. Those who do not qualify for the Pell Grant receive the "room" portion of room and board and have to pay the remainder out of pocket.

We just got their aid package today. For us, they didn't even cover the room or the board portion. Pretty disappointing based on how they market it. We have a visit planned on Friday, so depending on what my son thinks vs VMI, I may see if they can do better.

To be clear, your son is a national ROTC scholarship recipient (and you've informed the financial aid office of this), and they have NOT included the National Service/Service to Country scholarships on his aid package?

If that's the case, I have to imagine it was an error. I highly suggest you call ahead and make an appointment with a financial aid counselor so you can sit down face to face and discuss while you in Charleston. BTW, enjoy the visit. The Citadel is a beautiful campus, and think your DS is going to like it. VMI is beautiful too, but Charleston and Lexington have different vibes, and my guess is that after seeing both, your son will gravitate toward one or the other.

Best of luck. Keep us posted!

Thanks. Yeah, I let them know about the scholarship as soon as we found out. The aid packages lists "National Service Scholarship", but the amount seems low when you compare other SMCs offering full room and board.

Updating just to give people real numbers that we’ve experienced this year. My ds is at TAMU which offers the Patriot Scholarship to cover R&B. The Corps actually has a ton of scholarships that cadets can apply for. Ds’s outfit requires them to fill out the Corps scholarship form and he was given a few $1000 in Corps scholarships. It doesn’t really matter since those are then deducted from the amount his Patriot Scholarship covers. They matter a lot to his friends who are not on scholarship. For one scholarship application, he was able to write in that his roommate needed the scholarship more than he did.

Our OOP costs this year has been about $1500. We initially paid $2000 first semester (mostly for the required sports pass), but then were refunded money to ds’s account. While they do post all of the fees in his portal, the refund was a mystery. We owed a grand total of $0.13 for second semester. AFROTC pays for uniform rental as well ($1000/year, I think). None of this counts Ds’s stipend, travel pay, and books that he got paid over the year so he definitely came out positive. The Corps requires freshman and sophomores to have the highest food plan which is unlimited meals 7 days/week, 7 retail meals/week, and dining dollars. The Patriot Scholarship covers that plan since it is required. The meal plan has been really nice for ds and his buddies. They definitely use it to its full potential.

I can tell you what the National Service Scholarship was for my DS this year -- $2,231 per semester. So, subtract $4,462 from the published annual room and board rate of $10,375 and you're on the hook for $5,913.

Then you also have the quartermaster fee of more than $9,700 for freshman. That covers uniforms and supplies. The uniforms are expensive! After freshman year the quartermaster fee is only $3,000 something per year.

Bottom line is The Citadel is in fact expensive. And while they do offer considerable support to ROTC scholarship winners, and they do not lead SMCs in that regard.

Thanks for that info. It is helpful.

There are schools out there that are very easy to work with on the room and board end. If that is what you are looking for. You have to ask in a very pointed fashion. I just had the bursar from one of my sons email me because he had a HOLD on account. I sent an email back stating he was a ARMY 4 year winner and the school covers room and board. They looked at his past bill payment and immediately cleared his bill. I have one living in off campus apartment through the university and it is expensive and they pay for it. Along with meals. My younger son has same thing starting next year. The R&B portion was a big deal for us so my sons looked mainly at schools that offered it.

Forgot to add this is need based. If you qualify for a federal Pell Grant, then The Citadel will give you full room and board as part of the National Service Scholarship. If you don't qualify for Pell Grant, you only get the "room" portion as I described.
