Room and Board

My school (RPI) waives room and board for on campus. Off campus they give $12,600 a year for ROTC students.

Ole Miss Room & Board

DS and I just returned from a visit. I can confirm that AROTC cadets receive a $2000 per semester room & board credit as long as they maintain a 3.0 GPA and a 240 APFT

We also visited with NROTC and they did not discuss a credit so it must be only an AROTC policy at Ole Miss

Has anyone had any luck getting the financial office to allow payment from two sources if they are both paying tuition & fees only? If you have two scholarships and they both say they only cover tuition & fees, do you HAVE to turn one down or can you just get a credit on your account and then use that credit for room & board?

It varies from university to university. Find out if your scholarships are "stackable." For example, my son has a merit scholarship which is valued at full tuition. The university allows that to be applied towards room and board or other fees since ROTC is paying his tuition. The ability to stack scholarships is HUGE. Some allow it, others don't. It was a major deciding factor when he was listing his schools on the application. He knew where he had merit $ and listed accordingly. As a result, all of his school is completely paid for. Also, AROTC has the option to pay room and board in lieu of tuition if another source is paying tuition.

+1 to txpotato in general. Actually though, it's determined by the scholarships. If the scholarship is limited to tuition and fees you'll be unable to stack. Some merit scholarships will only cover tuition and fees, others can be applied to room and board as well. If it's not clear to you if you can stack them, then speak to the bursar(s) at your college(s) for clarification.

It's also worth speaking to the bursar(s) to find out if there are any special room and board deals for ROTC cadets and midshipmen.

Only certain colleges offer room and board. However, you could use the monthly stipend to pay for housing. If you are a Junior or Senior, you can sign up for the Simultaneous Membership Program and get a bonus yearly salary.

Georgia Mom, I also sent you a PM. Can you tell me where you got this info re: Ole Miss, b/c we were told (and I believe I saw here too) that Ole Miss offers no R&B credit? Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience with the NROTC at Jacksonville University. My son received a 4 year NROTC scholarship, and we are wondering about the room and board. He was told to sign up for general housing.

My son was also awarded a 4yr NROTC scholarship to the University of New Mexico. I have heard that some colleges and/universities offer free or discount housing. Does anyone know if UNM offers free/discount housing?

My DS does not attend either of the 2 universities mentioned above. He recently received a 2 year NROTC scholarship. It does not help with housing, only gives him the monthly stipend which can be applied towards that. And, the scholarships he got from the University, those will no longer be given to him.

I actually found the information on the NROTC site for the university. The information describes the type of room, double, and the number of meals per week that the school will pay for.

I guess some universities go the extra step for their ROTC students and some don't. I think it is great that your school shows such support!

thank you calimom! I'd hoped that info existed somewhere without having to go to each of the school's websites!

If your problem is not wanting to go onto the schools' websites to find room and board information then you lack the determination needed for military life and you lack the independence for college. Your wasting people's time even applying for the scholarship.

What possible value would it serve to call out a poster from a comment made in 2009? Seems like a "waste of people's time."

Further, what makes you knowledgeable on the "determination needed for military life?"

Emily,
I can see you are new to the forum, so we all should give you a pass on your post impo, but for your future knowledge replying to a post that is six years old is usually a waste of time and energy. Seeking knowledge has not posted in almost 2 years. Her DS was awarded a scholarship that year and my guess is that their child if they stayed in the program their is either an O1 now or likely to commission (5 yr major) commissioning this May. That being said I would think they would be an invaluable asset to any and all posters from her anecdotal experience of what her DS has gone through for four years as a cadet.

I also would say that this since you are a new poster. This is an anonymous forum. It is why you don't see people use their real names. You may want to request the mods the ability to change your moniker, unless of course Emily Sayles isn't your real name.
