Notre Dame's student newspaper published an article today that specifically references admissions and ROTC that I thought might interest some.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting insights into the collective applicant pool. My DS was admitted to ND class of 2024 and he checks both the “NROTC” and “legacy” boxes. Unfortunately for me as an alum, it didn’t make the final cut of schools on his list given the relative weakness in their engineering programs. It is now down to USNA (appointed) and MIT. Good luck to all in this difficult decision cycle for our HS seniors.

Interesting about the increase in high testing, gpa kids with little extras...

Interesting comment about the weakness of the engineering program. DS 1 graduated from ND with a Civil Engineering degree and was NROTC...DS2 is a JR at ND pursuing a Civil Engineering degree also NROTC. I think NDs engineering program has come a long way and is much higher caliber than he might be giving them credit for. A friend who is a doctor who went to ND said noone works harder or longer than engineers at ND...and he was pre-med. All that said, although the degree matters, after graduation he is commissioning into the Navy, in all practicality he will not be using that degree right away. DS 1 commissioned 3 years ago in May...got his wings in November and is currently still training on his specific aircraft...based on when he got his wings, his 8 year commitment, he will have 10 years in before he can decide to stay or go...either way, the civil engineering degree may no longer be as current so it's more about the networking and connections. I would also say that once you commission, and I'm speaking directly about flight school, there hasn't been much of a difference between whether or not you went to USNA or a university or where you went for that matter....DS1 most recent roommates were USNA grads...they were all treated alike thru flight school....at the end of the day, it was more about how you performed in flight school than where they went to school. Just thought I'd share my experience....DS2 passed up several Ivy's for ND...no regrets.
As far as ND NROTC...top notch...excellent experience both sons.

Thanks @goirish1, no argument here about the quality of an ND education at the risk of deprecating my own. The NROTC unit and long standing affiliation with USNA/ USN is probably unmatched except for maybe a few SMC...and even then ND is on par. He’s focused on nuclear engineering, so EE probably would have met many of those interest areas, but the opportunity to learn from some of the preeminent scholars in the field is a big draw for him. He was fortunate enough to to get into a number of fine universities including Yale, UCLA, and Berkeley; but it was really down to ND, MIT, and USNA....I would say if it were anything but MIT, it would certainly be ND or USNA. Not my call. Go Irish!

Thanks @MegND95. Previously I read a 2018 Observer article about the new OMVA room and board scholarship program that "not all of the allocated ROTC spots are utilized." With these increases, wondering how much closer they got to full utilization?

The University set goals to increase ROTC admits in the past few years, having admitted 125 this year in comparison to 94 last year and 65 in 2018.

My DD was also admitted to MIT, Notre Dame, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. Waitlisted at USNA, her top choice. No legacy at any of those schools.
