ROTC "Criminals"

As a father of an AROTC cadet at Harvard, I am not sure the "Criminal" perspective is very reflective of the Ivy league. There are clearly are challenges, particularly with critical mass. However given the crap-shoot that is the admission process, all of the other opportunities available to the kids applying to these schools, the existing generous need-based financial aid available at Ivys without any requirements for service, as well as the relatively low interest in serving among college bond high school students - I am not sure that having low numbers participating is too surprising or due to a lack of support from the school. In addition, the academic work is brutal enough but adding on 20 hours a week of additional "training" isn't an easy sell. The school has some rather stringent views on financial aid interpretation, which devalue the worth of any scholarship - essentially offsetting it against any need based aid. Harvard is not interested in giving credit for MS courses etc. These issues aside, my sense is that there is a general sense of respect among the students, faculty and administration for the Cadets. Some of the these issues were just highlighted in this student newspaper piece, the tone of which is quite contrasting with the one from Brown.
