Hello all,
My son has applied for an Army ROTC scholarship, which we are very hopeful that he will receive. I am curious... if he does not receive a scholarship, will he still qualify for monthly stipends if he participates in ROTC? Additionally, what is the breakdown for monthly stipends for freshman, sophomore, etc.

Thanks so much!

Good luck with the scholarship. Only contracted cadets qualify for stipends. Not sure on the current AROTC stipend amounts. I think it is summarized on the AROTC Scholarship page.

Thank you for your response. I am new to the lingo. Can one be contracted without a scholarship? I am assuming so. My son definitely wants to participate in Army ROTC and pursue a career in the military.

I found the answer on the Army page. Thanks again!

Army ROTC scholarships also provide monthly living allowances of $420.00 per month for ten (10) months of each school year.

This allowance is also available to all non-scholarship Contracted Cadets enrolled in Army ROTC (2nd, 3rd, & 4th years)

Correct - your DS would have to be contracted to get the stipend.

At least in the AF, when you contract in Junior year, whether you are on scholarship or not, you get a monthly stipend. I can't tell you when the Scholarship kids get their stipends

Can speak for AF ROTC scholarship kids...Once they have DODMERB completed, and pass PT test, at least at my DD's school, they were put in to start their stipend. It took till the end of October for anyone in her unit to start theirs. And book stipend did't show up until early December for the fall semester. She gets paid twice a month.

I loved the stipend, once my son got paid each month, never had to send him another dollar. However, I did pay for his school tuition, apartment, car and insurance so no, he wasn't hurting from my lack of funds. And yes he did work.

Ensure your son talks to someone from ROTC at the school. Usually this would be the ROO. If he a non scholarship they may or may let him contract.

Prior to the beginning of his junior year he would have to.

The reason I bring it up. Some of the kids at my sons school (non scholarship) wanted to contract and it never happen (freshman and soph). This is the account from my son.

He wanted to contract this spring to get the stipend (he is a 3Yr AD) he was told to wait until this fall. He has everything turned in would need to take the ACFT and swear in.

Maybe its just something weird to us.

I would ask the ROO or someone (PMS) about when he could contract.
