ROTC Scholarship certificate or award?

DS school counselor is asking me about a certificate or award for sons NROTC and AFROTC Scholarships for senior awards at graduation. Do those exist? All son has are emails informing him of his status. I can have him log into his account, take screenshots and print those out. Is there such a thing as an award certificate or something? Son never worked with a recruiter or anyone. He just completed applications online, submitted documents, went for interviews all on his own. He had no point of contact or recruiter working with him.
Is this something I need to look into? I googled Rotc awards and I see all these pictures of young kids holding gigantic checks like they just won the state lottery? (Son doesn't care about these things but it would be a nice moment for his Grandparents to see at graduation).

ROTC can have someone come to graduation and make a presentation. I'm surprised your counselor isn't familiar with that. My daughter has an email from AFROTC with this request form. It's a nice presentation, the ROTC rep says a little bit and then hands over an oversized check like you mentioned. This is coordinated with ROTC. Maybe the request form is in an email and he overlooked it?

I will have him look into it. Thanks for your response. Counselors office just asked about it.

With Army my DD got a very nice certificate in a folder, I do not know about the other services. Both the Air Force and Army representatives did not show up for my daughter's (Army for her, AF for someone else) senior assembly. However, one of the counselors got the information from her ROTC ROO, and also the information on the young man going to the AF Academy and explained the whole process. They chose a counselor who is a veteran and still currently serving with the national guard and he did a great job. Congratulations to your son, whatever they do for him will be awesome!!!

Son/I and counselor have been attempting to contact several people. No luck, no responses. School counselors have now left this out of senior awards. There will be no acknowledgement of either of sons ROTC Scholarships at senior awards. Not a happy mama right now.

I'm retired AF. My son applied for both Army and Air Force ROTC. I can honestly (and painfully) say that the Army ROTC process was FAR better than the Air Force ROTC process. He also received a nice certificate in a binder from the Army for his scholarship. Very similar to a diploma setup.

I am surprised that the confirmation from his portal stating he is a winner isn't official enough? Or a copy of his offer letter or email isn't enough? Sorry to hear about this.

We also found that the local AROTC battalion reached out to her high school alerting them of her scholarship, even though that was not one of her schools. This makes me think it comes from Cadet Command. It does sound like in the case of scholarship awards the Army has some good systems in place.

Son doesn't care. He said that he didn't apply for a scholarship for a few seconds of fame at a high school awards assembly. I'm just disappointed because son is such a humble kid, always puts others first and mom wanted his moment. :(

He is going to be recognized for a few local scholarships he received $500-1000 but that scholarship he received valued at $180,000 won't even be mentioned.

Welcome to the annual scholarship presentation threads...this discussion pops up every year. AROTC battalion's are tasked to reach out and present to winners in their area. I was in Copenhagen, NY with my big check yesterday afternoon watching the spring semester awards with the all the parents and families from the small town. I think the senior class numbered around 15. Three hours in the car round trip to hand a young lady her big check. The fact that she's coming to Clarkson and her sister is one of our rising juniors made it worth the time. Next week I'll be in Carthage, NY to recognize four winners at our closest JROTC Battalion...only an hours drive., one way. We try our best to get them all, but there are times when we don't have enough Cadre to get to all the ceremonies. There's only one ROO in the Albany (Mohawk) area, so he and the cadre down there are probably trying to cover 25 ceremonies over about a month, as Cadre are getting ready to head to summer training and the Battalion executes a commissioning. That's what you Army winners should be seeing.

Not sure if/how Air Force and Navy do it. I don't think my Air Force counterpart here a Clarkson does anything like what we do.

That is very disappointing. DS heading into 3rd year of NROTC, and he and one of his friends both had a Chief from the recruitng district present their certificates and "big check." I have taught in the high school he attended for almost 25 years, and these are the kinds of awards that the districts should want to embrace.

If a student has a desire to defend his or her nation as a member of the military, and has the scholastic ability to excel in this type of setting, it should be held up as an example of what is possible to attain if you so desire.

Thank you for what you do for these kids. :) You're really creating some special moments for all of them and their families.

That's so terribly sad ! It was such a big presentation at our daughter's school. Maybe it can be presented at graduation?

The counselors can acknowledge the award on their own as well.
But my daughter received a AF form to complete requesting that someone from the AF be at graduation. I don't know why your son didn't receive the same thing. Our counselor is also in the loop because we have 3-4 ROTC grads even year.

Son has not received anything. We have double checked his emails. Nothing on the portal either. Like I said he doesn't care but mom/dad/grandparents do. Just a little disappointed. There are over 1000 in his graduating class so no special treatment from the counselor.

My son's school invited the Navy representative to come to his honors night. It's my understanding that they agreed until just a few days before the ceremony. My son hasn't received DODMERB clearance yet so they said they are unable to come and present him with the big check. I was a bit disappointed, but as I told him, earning that scholarship is most important. Maybe, after DODMERB clearance they'll find an opportunity to do something "ceremonial" for him.

How do I request this for my son? DS is 4 year Army ROTC scholarship winner going to VaTech and we live in Michigan.

Hi have you tried contacting any of the NJROTC units in your area or if your school has any branch of JROTC? They might be able to pull something together for you. It is a big deal for their programs to see the kids get this award acknowledgment especially doing senior award night.

Army the closest ROO to you Is supposed to do the presentation. DS was going to an out of state school and that ROO might have enjoyed a free trip to Key West ...the Miami ROO(school he is transferring to this year ironically) actually sent the certificate to the Key West Recruiter's office and the recruiter presented it.
Not sure if you talked to the ROOs (not sure name for AF/NROTC recruiting officer) but the school/s he selected to receive the award should be able to let you know how they handle it.
