I'm a female and I'm currently a junior in high school. My gpa is 3.83, and I've taken one AP math class. I have four varsity letters and I'm a 3 year captain for volleyball. I've also been working at a restaurant for over a year now and I plan to continue working there until I graduate. I'm taking the SAT first week of June. Right now, I'm thinking of majoring in either political science or criminal justice. I would prefer NROTC, but my understanding is that they want more math and science based majors. I want to join ROTC because I truly want to be in the military, but I also want to get a degree so it seems like the best option! Any information or advice would be very helpful!

If you are poli-sci or CJ, your chances are best with either NROTC/Marine Option or AROTC. Both of those programs are far less focused on STEM majors.

No one here can say for certain, but you certainly have good grades, athletics and leadership. The SAT is critical. They do look at the "whole person" but the SAT (or ACT) is the one thing that evens the playing field for candidates. Everyone is taking the same test. Having a job shows good time management as well.

Of course you should apply to all of the above and that way you will have options.

Good luck and thanks for being willing to serve.

I agree, You can apply to multiple branches, you have time.

In the meantime while you are applying and then waiting, start reaching out to schools with ROTC programs and start talking to the appropriate people. For Army it is the ROO or Recruiting Operations Officer. Visit as many of the schools and ROTC departments you can and not only will y meet gr at resources for the process but visiting can help you make some very big decisions as well. Good luck!

A tier 3, 4 year NROTC major, here's some advice:

-Take on more leadership roles senior year (if this means you have to start your own club, START IT ASAP)
-Take more rigorous classes, both in the major you wanna do (Ex, for me it meant more AP history classes)
-Do well on your physical test, train all summer

You can do it!

Thank you! I just got my SAT score back today and I got a 1370! I also took a practice ASVAB and I got an 85, but the recruiter said that peoples scores usually increase 5-10 when they take the real one. I'm going to start the scholarship application process in a of couple weeks, but I was wondering if you might know when I would have to take the PFT?

I agree keep working hard and it is possible. Even if you don't pick up a 4 year, you can still join the program your freshman or sophomore year of college as a college programmer and if you get good grades in college, then you should definitely get at least advanced standing after your sophomore year of college, which are the same benefits as a scholarship with the exception that your tuition is not paid for. I am a tier 3 major too.

Congrats on the SAT score! Just curious, though, why are you taking the ASVAB?

I don't think I'm going to take the real one, but someone suggested it because they said that if you scored well on it, it could make you more competitive? Honestly I'm not really sure.
