I have been selected to interview for a ROTC scholarship. USMA is still my first choice, but I am thinking about a civilian military academy (VMI, Citadel) as a backup...maybe even with the possibility of reapplying to WP.

Do I need to interview for the scholarship with VMI and/or the Citadel or can I interview at a university close to my home in North Carolina?

When should I apply to the Citadel and/or VMI?

Any advice would be helpful.

I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that the application for the Citadel already closed back in July for the class of 2013. I know that they are already sending out academic acceptance letters. VMI's application doesn't open until September 1st.

usna hopeful,
you said that The Citadel already started sending out academic acceptance letters? Have you got yours? I completed mine early July so i'm just waiting now. And no the The Citadel application is still open it just would've helped to have it done by July 18 I believe.

Yes, I have been academically accepted to the Citadel- it is one of my back up choices in case I do not get into the Naval Academy and then I plan on re-applying.

The Citadel and VMI both practice rolling admissions- The Citadel's has definitely not closed already for the class of 2013 (although I can't find a published date for their decision points). VMI's deadline for Early Admission is Nov 15th and for all applicants is Feb 1st.
Good question about getting your interview for ROTC scholarship. For Army ROTC - Cadet Command will help you set up an interview at the nearest ROTC detachment. However, if you can do so, once you complete your application- I personally would suggest that you try to arrange your interview with the detachment that is your primary choice. Although it appears that the Army has centralized the decision process more this year than in years past, I am certain that the PMS at each school will still carry some weight in the decision, so interviewing there if you can do so would seem to be a plus. Additionally- it will give you a clearer picture of life at that school. Balanced against that of course is the cost and time involved to get to your first choice school.
At the end of the day - regardless of where you are interviewed, make sure that you spend a fair amount of time preparing yourself for your interview- with a lot of practice interviews in front of people who will give you honest and constructive feedback about your answers, your reasoning and even simple things like your manorisms. All of those things are important in creating a solid impression on the person interviewing you.
Good luck

You should have recieved a letter from cadet command with a list of nearby colleges to conduct the interview. Some colleges on your school of intent list for ROTC may contact you and ask you to do the interview there, but you should be able to do it at the nearest school that hosts ROTC. In my case, MSU was in the area and was also on my list, so the PMS contacted me and asked if I would like to conduct the interview there. This is all with regards to Army ROTC.

ok cool I finally got my academic acceptance letter today to The Citadel. Now just waiting on scholarship review boards!

Congratulations! Is the Citadel your first choice? What ROTC are you looking to do?

Citadel is definately up there on my list. I'm applying also to CGA,USMA, an VMI. I still don't know which one I would pick if accepted to all. I applied marine option to The Citadel, and Army ROTC an I'll prolly also apply for the Air Force rotc scholarship as well.
