I am a 16 year old female, Junior in high school, wishing to serve my country as an Army Officer. I only found out I wanted to take this path about 6 months ago. I don't have the money to afford college on my own, and I'm super unsure about USMA. I honestly do not think they will accept me with my stats, and I'm not even sure that is where I want to go to college. I am, however, interested in VMI and the Citadel.

Here are my stats. They really aren't where they need to be, and that's because I was a completely different person for the past few years. But I was wondering if I still have a chance.

*GPA: 3.68 (will hopefully be 3.7 by end of junior year)
*ACT: 22, got this score WITHOUT studying. Currently studying for June and should score a 24-27.
*SAT: Taking in May.
*Have taken mostly Honors classes for all of HS. Hoping to take an AP class senior year.
*Sports: I have not played any sports during high school. I attend an online public school, so playing team sports is sort of hard. I'm hoping to play some type of sport within my community by Fall of 2016. Not sure if that will count on my application by that time.
I DO, however, do CrossFit and have been for 2+ years. I compete every few months in local competitions. I am very passionate about it, and I am currently training to ace my PT test by Fall.
*Library volunteer 2011-2014, Student Council Member (2016-present), NHS Member and NHS Secretary (2015-present), Peer Tutor (2016-present), Beta Club Member (2016-present), Yearbook Team Member (2014-2015), Member of Christian youth group & church (2014-present), Planned and currently leading a PE class for homeschooled children (2016-present)
*Work: Chick-fil-A Team Member (2015-2016), Underage Tobacco Details w/the Georgia Dept. of Revenue (2015-present), Childcare for Classical Conversations homeschool group (2014-2015), general Childcare/babysitting (2013-present)

So, that's about it currently. I'm going to try to do a team sport within my community in Fall, and also possibly join my local Civil Air Patrol squadron. I know I am not the best, and I honestly wish I would've done more during the past few years. I definitely would've, had I known this would be the path I ended up choosing. Thank you in advance for your replies. Have a wonderful day!

You will hear a lot here that since no one on the forum is on the board there is no way anyone can accurately predict your chances.
Having said that with the exception of your ACT, and no team sport your stats are better than my son's and he won a scholarship. Not sure how they class rank online schooling but there must be a formula with all the home schoolers who apply and win.

Apply and give it your best shot. Work on plan b,c and d. You should also take a look at NROTC Marine Corps Option. Good luck and use the forum for information.

You never know if you don't try!! There is always USMA Prep and there are a few military 2-yr colleges that have Academy Prep as well. Check into New Mexico Military Institute as one. Apply for VMI, Citadel, Norwich, North Georgia. Apply for ROTC. You might just surprise yourself. It's it's your goal, make it happen. It may not be immediately after high school, but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility. Dream BIG!

Your plan is a good one. Get your GPA up and raise that ACT / SAT score. Cross fit is good. Should help you score high on the AROTC physical fitness test. Find out what you need to do to max that test and then max it. Not sure doing a team sport is critical at this point. It is a hole in your resume you will have to overcome with other things. They are looking for varsity letters and leadership as a team captain. Your leadership is in other areas. Being a member of a club is not as good as being an officer of the club. In recent past Army awards about 2500 scholarships each year. About 600 are 4 yr scholarships. Those typically go to applicants that have USMA caliber records. The remaining 1900 are 3 yr scholarships. You have a good story. You will need to write it up and explain your situation, your desire and when you had your epiphany about becoming an Army officer and provide it in the remarks section in the Army ROTC portal. If you can, you should visit Citadel and VMI. I do not have first hand knowledge of Citadel's admissions process, but I know it would be good for you to do an interview with admissions at VMI. How to schedule that is on the VMI admissions web page. Portals for AROTC and for admissions in Aug 2017 opens in June I think. Get to work on your grades, your fitness and your leadership. Best of luck!

I agree with Falcon, a team sport at this point is not a critical factor. Since you are competitive in Cross-Fit, then that is an athletic aspect of yourself you can talk about during your interviews. Work on strengthening your leadership within the organizations that you are involved in, in the coming months, as you will regularly be asked about past leadership roles, and evaluated on your future potential as an Army Officer. Be sure to stay on top of deadlines, as they are earlier than you think. Best of luck to you!

Plan on working anything you want said into your essay.
My son's AROTC interview ( at local school, nor school of choice) was VERY brief.
His NROTC-MO interview was 2 interviews and was over an hour and a half combined.

Check out the class profile for the most recent class at West Point and shoot for those stats. Scholar, athlete and Leader. Work on the standardized tests and leadership.

Thank you all very much for your replies. The information you have provided me is very much appreciated. I will continue to work hard and improve in as many areas as I can!

Received 4-year scholarship to Arizona state and university of Arizona. Choose ASU because of specific computer engineering degree.

High school stats:

GPA: 3.8
ACT: 23
SAT: terrible didn't put it down
No honors classes, my school didn't offer it, but I did dual enroll English 101 and English 102. Haven't taken one English class in college thank god.

Did 4 years of JROTC, finished as a captain helped out a lot had fun.

Received Amelia Earhart award from civil air patrol, I definitely recommend you do this** especially without sports to back you up.

Eagle Scout, went to philmont, good times.

Worked at a local bakery for 2 years on the weekends(I lived in a small town). Made good cinnamon rolls (ate too many too).

Now for the part that probably made me get the scholarship. I participated in the cyber patriot program in high school. I was part of one of the finalist teams and ended up being the number one army team in the nation. After that I was offered an internship at Northrop Grumman as an itern. Worked there last year of high school.

Unfortunately like most applications you got to make sure you have one big thing that is just gonna stand out.

Didn't even apply for the academies, never looked back. I don't want to say why I didn't go because people on the forum will whine all day. ASU is great just as good as an academy if you make it. Get what you put in no matter where you go
