I'm a prospective class of 2025 cadet and West Point is my number one school with Air Force and Navy at #2 and #3. However I'm also looking at some other options in the case I'm not accepted. I know Virginia Tech has a great Army ROTC program so I was looking into them however being out of state it can be pricy. I don't know much about ROTC scholarships and I know Virginia Tech offers some of their own but I was hoping somebody could describe what scholarship options look like through ROTC and any other important details.

Personally what I did was apply to a school or two that I felt I could get into at a lower cost (I chose my in-state school). I then applied to all of the schools I wanted to, regardless of cost. I ended up accepting a 4-Year to the school that was the most expensive. The bottom line is cast a broad net across many types of schools both service academies and not and make sure you have at least one school where you have a strong chance of getting in and low tuition (probably whatever you in-state school is). You also might want to check out some senior military colleges like The Citadel if you are looking for a school that offers a similar structured life to that of USMA.

Army ROTC scholarships, for example, are 3 or 4 year scholarships that pay full tuition + fees (OR room and board), a book stipend and a living stipend.

Also, go onto all of the ROTC websites and do research of your own.

My DS applied to VA Tech (Class of 2024) for Army ROTC. If you are accepted to VA Tech the Army ROTC scholarship will cover FULL tuition if the ROTC board designates VA Tech as your top school to attend leaving you only having to pay for room and board, which is not onerous.

The VA Tech Corps of Cadets also offers an Emerging Leader Scholarship (around $12,000 over four years) that will help defer the cost of room and board. VA Tech really is a great option if you can get in and you are awarded an Army ROTC scholarship.

I am a USMA 2024 Candidate with my backup school being Virginia Tech. I have accepted a 4-year AROTC scholarship at VT. With Tuition and Fees, a book stipend and living stipend, I can afford it. There's also a scholarship from the corps that covers $12,000 over 4 years (I think its 9,000 if you're in-state). I also have a small merit scholarship from VT (normal admissions not corps of cadets) that I can apply to room and board if I need to. AROTC is a great option and VT is special in which they are a senior military college. If you're looking for a normal college experience, VT is better than a service academy, but still not a normal civilian college.

Edit: I should mention that when I got my AROTC Scholarship, VT was not one of my 3 options to accept it at. I accepted it at my next highest choice to secure the scholarship, then submitted a request to have it transferred to VT. If this happens, you need to accept the scholarship at one of your options, otherwise, you might lose it altogether.

You very capably described my son's Plan B in lieu of USMA. We have a daughter that is a Hokie and, as a family, we have nothing but 100% positive things to say about VT. Our son recently was informed that he had also received the ELS, and with his AROTC scholarship, we have calculated it would be less than $10K/year out of pocket for us (out of state). We feel very lucky and blessed that he has this opportunity, however he has already accepted his appointment to USMA '24.

TexasAggie204, your son and mine will be classmates at West Point this summer. We are feeling very blessed.

I know going ROTC also entails a commitment to serving in the army. How does it work if you are in ROTC, reapply to USMA, and get accepted? Are the military requirements conflicting or do they convey over to USMA where you would start new as a Freshman?

If you are accepted as a re-applicant, you do not have conflicting service. You would have the 5 active 3 reserves just like someone who started at West Point. You also have nothing to pay back from your scholarship.
