In early October DS, a 2nd Classman at VMI, was offered a 2-year AROTC STEM Scholarship. His mom and I were somewhat stunned by the news as we were told by the the MS folks last spring that he failed to apply for a campus-based scholarship.

DS has always wanted to contract, but it took a stern lecture from his mom about the expense of VMI, and the debt he was about to incur, to get him motivated to pursue the scholarship.

A bonus for us is that we were told that as long as he passes his physical and is contracted before December 10th, we'll be getting a refund on the fall tuition.

Is it unusual to apply for and receive a campus-based scholarship in the same semester? I couldn't find anyone similar situation in a search of this forum.

As a Dad whose son was late applying for a sideload scholarship last year, and therefore didn't have it sent up the line, let me be the first to say congratulations. :thumb: I certainly understand the need for the financial lecture, etc. Been there, done that. My tag line tells the story for this semester.

I don't recall hearing of anyone who could have it applied the same semester it was won. But then I have more exposure to Navy than Army so perhaps its a difference in the services. I expect he's already in good shape and will contract by Dec 10 with no problem. I know that would be a mere formality for my kid. As others like to say, keep him in bubble-wrap until he passes the PT test and contracts (we've had problems with injures this semester but I don't think they're setting my boy back much).

AROTC STEM Scholarship

One speculation I had is that he's allowed to use it this semester because it's a AROTC STEM scholarship? I've actually never heard of that particular term or scholarship before. Is it in fact tied to STEM and named as such?

Congrats to your son! I don't think it's too unusual. My DS was awarded a campus based scholarship in October of his MS1 year. It was backdated to August and he received a refund of his fall tuition.

I would expect the book Stipend of $600, and the Tuition+Fees to be paid in full for this semester. I would expect the Monthly Subsistence Allowance (aka Stipend) to be paid for the portion of the month remaining from the date at which he Contracts, and then going forward.
