Couldn’t find this in a search:
If turned down from a service academy could you be offered a ROTC scholarship or is that completely different? I seem to think there was a “interested in ROTC” block on the application. Briefly looking at ROTC application process looks similar. Trying to make a plan B or C for my Junior DD. Wish the timing would be better to allow to apply for ROTC after finding out if accepted to SA or not. Guess we may have to do both and cover all possibilities.

They’re completely different processes. ROTC is the best possible backup plan if she knows what branch she wants to go into. I personally applied to both separately, and just heard back from NROTC this month, but still waiting on USNA. It’s nice to know I have a solid backup plan waiting for me if I don’t get appointed.

Thanks for the replies. Just trying to manage everything. Was hopeful this could be consolidated. I don’t want applications to be done too quickly and she is applying to 3 SA’s, and 3 MOC for nominations, adding ROTCs may distract some. Hopefully we can prioritize. I hope she gets accepted do a summer program which will help her decide.

If/when turned down, someone will not be offered NROTC as a scholarship as a "consolation prize." As mentioned, it is a whole different, just as competitive, process.

However, if turned down, you can still re-apply for the Academy (assuming you are not too old) as well as apply for an NROTC scholarship at a regular college. My kid got a TWE for c/o '25, went to a local state university, joined NROTC as a college programmer (non-scholarship mid) and applied for a 4-year NROTC scholarship while there, as well as the Academy again as a college re-applicant. He was awarded the scholarship first and was starting to process that when he was given an appointment for c/o '26. So, he turned down the scholarship and reported to the USNA for his Plebe summer.

Two different paths to the same commission. Both are very competitive, and different, but just as rewarding.

It is definitely possible and worth it! I applied to all of those as well and I like to think I was successful. Try to get as much done during the summer before senior year. April of my junior year I asked my teachers for letters of recommendation and I am very fortunate that they completed the teacher evaluations you need for the service academies before the end of my junior year. I submitted my USNA and NROTC applications by the end of August and then I did all my interviews (AROTC, AFROTC NROTC, BGO interview) and submitted ROTC and AFROTC in September-October, which is also when I submitted all my MOC nomination applications. Get ROTC applications done over the summer and set up ROTC interviews in early Fall so she will be eligible for the first board. I submitted my West Point and USAFA apps in December. Getting your applications done early is important because then your DD can enjoy senior year and not worry about looming application deadlines. I submitted my AROTC application in time for the first board and I think it greatly helped me not only get a scholarship, but my MOC nomination interviewers liked to see that I was committed to serving and completed my applications early.

The good thing is, you will do one DoDMERB submission for medical which will cover all the SAs and all ROTC. So, you only have to go through that once.
