Russia/Ukraine

A bit nippy at Lambeau. Favre weather. And I am always amazed at the bare arms in sub-freezing weather.
Trivia:

Favre had his best statistical year as a Minnesota Viking. And the original frozen tundra was met stadium in Minnesota.

Bare arms? Bud Grant banned heaters on benches back in the frozen tundra. When men were men.

Yes. I watched the entire Titans/Bengals game. Good game. I spent the earlier part of the day at a NJROTC athletic, academic, drill meet. 16 schools. We won the meet, as usual. DS commanded the armed basic team to a 1st place finish. I couldn’t be more proud of him.
How can they miss that interception call?

And congrats to DS and you!

Russia is pretty weak itself. I don’t see Russia extending its “imperialism” much beyond eastern Europe. Ukraine was under Russian influence for 300 years. Who gives a crap if they take over it now. I would be concerned if I were Bulgaria or Poland but the rest of us really don’t need to worry about this. I personally think China is more of a concern. Yes, we should sanction Russia for their adventurism, but going to war with them is not an option at this point. But I am watching the Packers/49ers game and am half in the bag so don’t pay any attention to what I am ranting.
I think the Ukraines who were brutalized by Russia and given a pinky promise by the US that if they have up their nuclear weapons we would guarantee their sovereignty care.
Putin is a bully. As we’ve seen in the past, bullies don’t stop. Ukraine will only be the beginning, just as the Sudetenland was just the begining.

The basic answer is that Russia doesnt like that Eastern European nations like Poland and Ukraine are part of Nato or US influence. Also just as important, although Putin knows he cant rebuild the Soviet Union in terms of land size, he still wants these countries to be under the influence of Russia. He doesn't have to run the countries which is more of a headache than it's worth, but he wants them to be part of the Russian alliance as its border against Nato. Honestly, i don't understand why he would ever fear Nato. Nato was basically created to defend against the Soviet Union. I can't honestly believe he thinks that all of the members of Nato would one-day vote to invade Russia.

In any case, there is zero percent chance that the US or Nato would defend Ukraine against the Russians. At best, there would be economical penalties and i am not even sure that would even amount to much as countries like Germany buy a lot of energy from Russia. The world allowed Russia to take Crimea without much of a penalty, so why should Putin worry about Ukraine. He will probably take out the leadership, put in his own people and Ukraine would be once again an independent nation with a leader who supports Russia

Russia views any country or alliance that is not part of or controlled by Russia as an enemy. The Russians are paranoid and insecure.

Of course they have good reason to be so. Their history is replete with foreign invasions. The Swedes, the French, the Turks, the Poles, the Japanese, the Germans (ESPECIALLY the Germans), etc. have all invaded Mother Russia in just the last 400 years.

Ukraine was much a part of Russia as Scotland has been a part of the UK, up until 1991.

Putin (and much of Russia) misses its Empire and wants it back.

Whether or not Ukraine being reabsorbed into the Motherland is a threat to US national security is a problematic question. Same as Taiwan being reaborbed into China.

Americans were once told we had to fight the Viet Cong in the Mekong Delta so we didn't have to fight them in San Diego.

Americans were once told told we have to fight the Iraqis in Iraq so we didn't have to fight them in Brooklyn.

Lies, on both occasions. At tremendous price.

I don't want to see freedom-loving Ukrainians fall under the Russian boot, of course. And I feel bad for the Uighurs & Tibetans in China.

But enough, already. If Europeans don't care about Russian expansionism on their doorstep, why should Americans?

Narco-terrorism in Latin America is a much more direct threat to US national security. And has been for 20 or more years. If we had spent more attention to events in Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador as we did Iraq, Syria, Iran, Yemen, etc. would we be better off today?

My thoughts...using an OLD dictionary (slovar)

Нынешний кризис не за горами. Русские всегда жаждали Украины. Они возьмут его либо политикой, либо силой.

I'm in complete agreement. I think he'd rather do it by politics.

And don't forget the Mongols of the Golden Horde (Tatars) who effectively ruled Russia for 200 years... until the time of Ivan the Great.

Interesting interview this morning with Fox News and the UK Ambassador to the US.

Also, remarks by a German officer during a meeting weren’t well received.

Only thing I would add to this is that our dear little Vlad is the wealthiest most powerful gangster/criminal in history. The KGB schooled him and he used a practical application of state power to organize and profit. It shows in his mind set and actions.

Asking with all due respect. I got hammered for going off topic on this thread. I agreed I should have started another thread so as not to derail this quality and time sensitive real world thread.

I was not trying to be political or “soapbox”. I honestly saw a correlation.

Moving forward I apologized and redirected to the OP post.

Meanwhile, the thread has divulged into football. And not a peep about redirection. I’m not salty, honestly. I will continue to follow for relevant and interesting information regarding Russia and the Ukraine as I have much to learn in that regard.

Anti-tank armament is supposed to be delivered ASAP (this week or next) based on news reports today. From the USA to Ukraine. Thoughts?

The Bills/Chiefs game was perhaps the best NFL game I have ever seen.

Sorry Heather! Back to your post.
can’t dispute that. But the prior game was stellar. Can we compare borders to end zones? For legitimacy?

I see the possibility of another Gleiwitz Incident in the near future.
I had never heard of this incident. How twisted and sick? Drugging the innocent, disfiguring victims? Weren't the Dachau prisoners experiencing enough torment? Ugh. Humanity distresses me.
