Russia Unveils New Stealth Fighter

I not too worried. My first thought when I read the post was pretty much confirmed by the article, cold war technology in a fancy new wrapper.

Well...just looking at these pictures...

1. The intakes don't appear to be very well concealed/stealthy. They seem to have a few "flat" areas...they'll show fine on radar.
2. The nose area doesn't blend very nicely into the fuselage/wing planform. Not sure what the RCS would be there...doubt its in the realm of the Raptor.
3. NONE of us has clue-one in reality because we don't have ANY real intel/data.

Do I think "...the F-22 and F-35 have some competition..."

Well...yes, and no. Yes as in there's a new jet out there...so that means there's always competition. NO as in I doubt their fire control system, weapons system, pilot training re: employment, has changed, technological baseline is still decades behind.

So...is this a threat to Raptor? The answer is ANY jet that has a gun and that gets into knife-fight range...is a threat!

I have a great HUD shot of an F-22 in a hard right break, and the gun aiming reticle is firmly set on that jet. As we say in the fighter world:

"THAT'S A KILL!"

New Russian "Stealth" fighter? Good for them! I think the Russians are about to find out just how hard (and expensive) actually developing and MAINTAINING that stealth technology is (and one of the reasons why the F-22 and F-35 are so expensive to make and maintain).

What has me concerned are other technologies that make a 5th Generation fighter 5th Gen. Advanced weapons (advanced long range air-to-air missiles) and avionics (particularly radar and Electronic Warfare gear).

But like Flieger said, there is always competition. Keeps us on our toes.

And I love guns kills! Nothing better in the debrief than "Here's the tracking shot we have on ya..."! :thumb:

Unless it's the OTHER guy showing it to YOU!

"Been there, done that..."
