I know this has been asked before, but we can’t seem to come up with a good answer.
High school counselor needs to know the value of ds’s scholarships. What do you think?

USMA: $225,000? $250,000?

AROTC:
Four years of tuition and fees of the assigned college
Plus stipend $4,200
Plus books $1,200

NROTC:
Tuition and fees x four years
Plus Stipend $10,000
Plus Books $1,200

???
How are the rest of you answering this?

There are two numbers one sees about the cost/value of SA education:
  • The Marketing/PR value: usually about $400,000. This is the estimated cost to put a Cadet through West Point including education, salary, and military training. A great number to announce at high school graduations
  • The claw back value: If you leave after committing to serve, SA's want their money back for educational expenses - as of 2018, USMA calculated this cost of tuition/room & board at $60,802/year, so the four year value of Tuition, Room & Board would round off to about $245,000

HS Counselor "NEEDS" to know or wants to know for publicity sake?? There is a difference, I can think of no legitimate reason a HS Guidance person would "NEED" to know anything about a students college scholarships or cost. It is really none of their business..:). If your DD/DS is awarded a ROTC Scholarship or a SA Appointment they will get the certificate showing the amount for that year, and in time for the HS and the student to make presentation arrangements.

@jl123 is spot on as far as "published' figures for a Service Academy Education. The certificates appointed cadets/mids receive from the Academy show the $400,000.00 value (as of 2019).

ROTC Scholarships for 2019 (the only year I know about) were capped at the same $400,000.00 for four years, but could be significantly less depending on the school and other financial awards. The certificates scholarship recipients got in 2019 also showed the $400,00.00 amount. Some schools provide room and board which can be added to the value of the awarded ROTC scholarship..:)

From the West Point admissions FAQ:

How long must I serve in the Army?
You must serve a minimum of eight years after you graduate in a combination of Active Duty and Reserve Component Service. This mandatory service obligation is the nation's return on a West Point graduate's fully funded, four-year college education that is valued in excess of $225,000.
