SAT Accommodations

Good evening all, I am scheduled to take the SAT this month with double time. I was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was 9 that allows me to take the SAT with extra time, but I have never taken meds, nor have I ever needed extra time on a test I did at school, and I'm a high school junior at the moment. Will I be able to get a waiver for this or will I need to take the SAT without extra time? Thanks

As an example, I’ve put the link from USNA that summarizes medical considerations. It is by no means a complete list, but it does address no accommodations.

Since you are a junior, you have time to take the test without extra time and see how you do, considering you have done well on regular school tests.

In the military, there is no extra time or accommodations available in “real world” military operations. That’s why the service academies like to see that you can perform well academically in courses and standardized tests without them, if you have this diagnosis in your record.

All my thoughts are unofficial, of course.

@MullenLE , the Deputy Director of DoDMERB, will no doubt pop up and offer to communicate with you on this to clarify your understanding. DoDMERB is the joint military organization which finds applicants either meet or do not meet standards.

Great answers given and I'd also like to point you to the guidance written in Steps to apply, College Entrance exams which is under Step 4 if your interest is in USNA, the below text is from the USNA Admissions guidance for college entrance exams.

"Check with your school counselor or visit the SAT and ACT website for test dates and registration requirements. We will accept any ACT or SAT test that is taken before January 31, even if the results arrive after. We do not accept test scores from a test taken with accommodations."

The above guidance is what I would want you to be aware of should you be applying to USNA.

I’m no expert, but at least the West Point handbook stipulates that the standardized tests will not be accepted if they are untimed. I suspect it is the same for USNA.

The USAFA Candidate Book states the same, “We do not accept nonstandard (untimed/extended time) scores or project test scores.” It also states “We will accept state required ACT or SAT tests administered under standard test conditions as well as School Day SAT tests administered under standard conditions.”
