SAT/ACT Cancellations Causing Issues?

It just makes no sense to keep cancelling because if they do it too much there will be too many seniors and juniors wanting to take the SAT that the schools won’t be able to meet health safety guidelines.

I doubt it is collegeboard or ACT that is driving these cancellations. They are risking their obsolescence with each one. If more and more state schools drop the requirement for this year, they may never reinstall it.

IMO, this is being driven by the local school boards who do not want the risk/liability of hosting the test at their schools.

I/all teachers got an email a few days ago asking for help proctoring the SAT at two of our schools in the eastern side of the county. I will email the points of contact to see if the test is still happening. The email had a tone of desperation. There were numerous students but few proctors.

I agree with @justme that the cancellations are local.

I contacted a testing coordinator for my district and found out all our testing sites are full and registration is closed for the upcoming date of 28 August. He said they are assessing the future testing possibilities as conditions dictate and to keep checking for dates and locations.

I know it’s local, but my point is that they keep cancelling and more and more seniors are piling onto the registration list.....if there are too many they(local school system) may have too many people and not enough assets to test all the seniors.

True, but that isn't their problem. That is Collegeboard/ACT's and pertinent colleges' problems.
I am sure if they get to a point where they feel safe from a liability standpoint, they would be willing to work with the testing companies for more frequent test dates and/or using more of the school room for higher registrations. But, if they don't get to that comfort level ever again, the school boards are not affected.

Maybe in towns with larger, open buildings (ymca gyms, etc...) they could bring in card tables and have folks test there, outside of gov't controlled decision makers. I dont see being able to to it online. Even the online AP exams had to be switched away from multiple choice sections to prevent cheating. SATs wouldn't be able to do that logistically (IMO).

Maybe schools with A/B in person teaching could do a test version on Tuesday and another on Wednesday in the Fall, rather than the one they do in Feb/March.

Either way, the way they’re handling it right now is putting a lot of strain on students to do the best they can to present themselves well for scholarships and some colleges

It will be interesting to see if average test scores for this scholarship cohort are down and if so, by how much. Our son took the test in December of his junior year and has a 29. Three tests have been cancelled, but he is scheduled for Sept here in Alabama. He's applying for the Army ROTC scholarship, hoping to follow his brothers to Bama. We originally hoped to have him boarded early. However, we may wait and have him submit in time for the second board if he can test and improve his score.

Quite a great goal, I'm going for the Army ROTC Scholarship as well....hopefully both your son and I will be lucky enough to receive one. I would stay strong because I haven't even gotten a single SAT/ACT in because of cancellations and how testing works in my school district, but if they continue to cancel there hopefully would be some "slack" for the difficulties Covid-19 has presented thus far to SAT/ACT testing.

Not sure what side of VA you are on, but some of the testing sites in Maryland are still available. If you are on the Ocean City side use zip 21811. Baltimore use 21228. I know you can go 75 miles out from those zip codes. Fortunately a test date for me opened up at the end of September for the SAT and the ACT is the following week I think

So far I have a test date for September but I have a backup and even a backup for the backup for that day. However, if a wide-spread case report is sent out all these locations will be cancelled......similar to what happened for the August SAT/ACT. Fortunately, my SAT for September hasn’t been cancelled.

I own a Huntington Learning Center and do SAT/ACT prep. The key is to go to a state that is red, seriously. And then go to a PRIVATE school location, vs a public school. The private schools seem to be much more flexible in not cancelling tests. Probably a few less layers of red tape.

My son got his last three SAT tests canceled also.
We changed his September SAT to Liberty University in Lynchburg which is still operating. Since it is a private school, I am guessing they will be less likely to close. No guarantees, but if you can get to Lynchburg, that may work.

just got an email today that our school will be offering the ACT and SAT in October for the seniors!

We have them as well in my area. I am hearing of candidates flying cross country to take the test. Improvise - a plane ticket and a hotel room is a small price to pay for improving your scores and getting a slot. With that being said - I feel for the class of 2025 - tough spot to be in.

From Mass and everything canceled up here all over New England. Tried to fly to family in NC for August test then that canceled! What states are actually having the tests! Will drive anywhere if we have to!

Was Liberty open for the August SAT? They could still cancel the September one, they seem to wait until a week before to make a decision then you can't change locations!

That's what has happened so far for the past three times I've rescheduled.

The last I heard, Liberty is still open and holding the August SAT test.
My son was scheduled elsewhere and got canceled for the August test.

Just found out today we are doing the SAT on 28 Aug and in September. We’re also doing the PSAT in October as usual.

My DD's school in MN added an early October ACT date for their own seniors on top of the Sept 12 date they were already hosting. I think private schools make the extra effort in times like these because getting kids ready for college is part of their deal and this extra effort goes with the territory. It's one of the things folks write checks for.

Edit: The signup for the 9-12 test has been extended thru the end of the week and late fees have been waived. They were still encouraging signups on their FB page yesterday, for what that's worth.
