SAT Scores

Just wanted to chime in.
My SAT scores were M-660 CR-640 W-600

I still got appointed to USAFA. I bet USNA is about the same with their gauge of test scores. SATs and ACT arn't everything so don' fret.

I thought I would give mine to ease your minds a little bit. :thumb:

Ha-ha, you guys are such overachievers. I absolutely resent my roomate, who occasionally complains about doing terrible on an exam, only to see him get a low A. Don't be that guy! I started applying to USNA with 580/430/420 SAT score and was basically rejected from NASS over the phone. After spending over $500 on SAT prep and taking the test multiple times, I was only able to bring up my scores to 680/580/550. What happened 11 months later? I was on my way to the PEP tent after falling off of my rack on week 1 of Plebe Summer.

For all you low-scoring SAT nail-biters: doing bad on a SAT should not discourage you from hoping! I remember those days when I was seriously considering going to a state college because I was so sure I was going to be rejected. I also remember coming home one January afternoon, and finding a TWE on the table. I stared at it for a good 10 minutes before I finally had enough guts to open it. It was a LOA. That day at practice I swam my fastest 50, 100 and 200 that I still can't beat today.

Bottom line is that USNA Admissions examines each person much more in depth than you think. The BGOs are absolutely amazing and invaluable assets. I talked to mine after I received an appointment, and was shocked to find out that he was able to identify certain aspects of my personality that even my parents don't realize. USNA Admissions truly does look at you as a whole person, so performing mediocre in one or two areas will not affect your application severely, if at all.

I wish you all good luck, and may all of you someday experience waking up to a sound of someone banging on your door, telling you to get the !@#$ out of the room with your sheets stuffed into a pillowcase. Just don't jump out of your bed; you might land of a desk.

PS: If it makes you feel better, Vice Admiral Fowler told us that people who score the lowest on SATs (<500) have the highest graduation rate at the accademy.

I *highly* recommend that everyone takes the ACT as well as the SAT. I got a 35 composite (equal to 2340 on SAT) but only a 2220 on the real SAT (and on the last one it dropped to a 2080).

Yea I was one of those non-stellar kids with standardized tests. My last SAT was 640 M, 590 CR and 560 W. And on the ACT I got 27 M and 26 E. But look at me, I got my LOA at the beginning of October with all the Ivy league caliber kids who apply to USNA.

This shows it really isn't all about test scores, it's about your character and your potential and your will to succeed. I showed this by getting my application done by mid-June, and keeping my head in the game, asking questions, making my RD know me personally and be alerted of my intentions.

You guys may have had less than stellar test scores, but I am willing to bet you were quite outstanding in some other area(s).

Congrats on being selected!

Took for the first time in December, plan to take it again and actually study!

If it is as competitive for appointments for the class 2015 as it was for the class of 2014, you all better not rely on just SAT and ACT scores.

Our nom is still waiting with 1480 SAT, 32 ACT. high ranked school, good grades and class rank. Tons of community service, athletics, etc.

Still waiting to hear. April 15th. Our nom has been accepted at all schools applied to. Only applied to USNA of the SA's.

So, you still have time to do things to enhance your chances of a nomination.

Don't take an LOA as a sure thing. It isn't (see USNA1985's posts).

Being a minority helps. Being a woman helps. Retake the SAT's with emphasis on maxing out the math.

Hints for the MOC interviews:
Study USNA history and some Naval history (US and world).
Write out numerous versions of why you want to be a naval officer.
Be able to discuss who you are.

Also:
No traffic tickets. no pranks or school suspensions.

There are alot more things to do and NOT do posted around this forum.

The fact is you are up against odds you have never imagined. So, start early in the application and preparation process. Read the ENTIRE catalog.

Stick with courses in high school that would point you toward a Tier 1 major at the Academy.

Remember, seriously,,,, the process you are now engaged in is about preparing to GET IN to the USNA, to learn how to appear to be the best candidate for a nomination and also the best nominee for an appointment.

After you are apointed and begin classes, that is when the rubber meets the road.

definitely going to need some improvement

Take the ACT as well! DS highest SAT was: 690 Math, 540 CR  but had a 32 Math ACT and a 30 Verbal ACT and was given an appointment to class of 2014 in October! Don't worry, you have plenty of time to improve, so do ALOT of practice tests. Don't give up hope! :thumb:

Dad of nominee - Agree so much with your post. There are things that help get an appointment that a candidate cannot change, so 2015 candidates work hard on things you can change, update and keep trying. My DSs stats very very similar to your son's - he received the TWE on Saturday. He did have a nomination, has many leadership positions at school - class officer, NHS co-president, 4.0 UW GPA...

So to OP - put together your best application, get your application done early, retake and retake SAT, keep updating your file and then hope for the best and know you have done all you can do to get that appointment.

Best wishes to all 2015 candidates and those 2014 still waiting!

Thank you Dad of nominee & MDMom! Great words of encouragement and advice! CLASS OF 2015 Let's do it, BIG!
