WOW!!! I can not believe I am already applying to the service academies - it feels like a week ago when I first discovered this place!

Anyways, my SAT scores came back today. I didn't do great. So, should I wait and retake the SAT or take my current ones (and superscore it) and put those in my portal?

Thanks in advance!

Also consider taking the ACT. Some people do considerably better on one test over the other. Go ahead and submit your scores but as stated continue to study. My DS kept taking the tests until he could no longer take and have scores reported by deadline. His final super score was competitive for appointment. Good luck to you.

I hope and pray you do better than I did: 34 ACT / 1510 SAT, 4.0GPA-AP classes, Senatorial and Congressional Noms, Varsity sports, Boys State, musician, Pilot = No Appointments:(

Whaaaa...those stats should be LOA territory...

There is more to this process than checking boxes. The interview is very important as well as leadership. Everyone has great grades, tests, athletics, etc.

A LOA is sometimes issued before completion of the application for applicants that the service academy deems to be highly competitive or very desired so I disagree that my comment implies just checking boxes... I agree with the rest of your statement.

Did you have a follow-up with admissions to ask them where you could improve? I'd be curious to know what the stumbling block was.

Appointments are complicated, dynamic and many factors considered (essays, interview, teacher evaluations, high school standing, etc.). Each year many very qualified candidates do not get Appointed. That's why having a good Plan B and C is so important.

I’m confused. Is June 4 your first time taking the SAT? If so that was a big mistake to be honest and just in case rising juniors are reading this… you should take it early and often… take both the SAT and ACT 1st semester junior year, and as often as you can after that.

But to the OP - you need to balance whether delaying applying to USNA and noms is worth waiting for a better score from a test this fall. Are you really strong in other areas? Also what does “not great” mean? Not great as in a 620 math or not great as in a 500 math.

Just for reference my son, now a Plebe, took the SAT for the last time in September as a Senior and finished his USNA app the first week of November. So it seems you have time, but I agree if that was your first try at the SAT, you need to get yourself into a prep class NOW and take the SAT again SOON.

With those scores, it is unlikely that it was SAT/ACT scores that kept you out. If you are reapplying, I would recommend reaching out to your Admissions Counselor to see what your application is missing .

Sorry, shouldn't have come across all gloom & doom, I did receive full 4-year ROTC scholarships from the Navy & AF and accepted into Ivy League & Ivy+ schools, so while not meant to be academy route, I feel I made out better in the end with the hybrid model.

How are you accepted into Ivies when the Applications haven't opened yet?

No - It was not my only time taking it! My superstore is 1350 for context so not great...

No worries - Just out of curiosity, Will you apply again? Also, how do you like ROTC at a top-tier university?

For preparing for the next round of testing I would definitely take as many practice tests as you can. I took the ACT and started off at a 28 but was able to raise it to a 34 by constantly taking practice tests with test conditions. It's not fun, but it makes the tests significantly easier.

I got the advice from a friend of mine in high school who made a 1600 on the SAT his junior year. He said every saturday morning from freshman year up until he took the SAT, he took a practice test with test conditions.

Hope this helps!
