My daughter has been accepted into the Scholars program. Last week she was assigned to GMI and she was surprised at this because her understanding was that this was the prep school for the athletes. She was not in athletics in high school she was active for four years in JROTC. Does anyone know what the criteria for selection to which prep school? Also what has been the experience at GMI

My son has also been accepted into the scholars program and we had researched GMC a bit and heard nothing but good about it. I believe only 15 scholars are sent to GMC and the balance go to Marion. We had researched GMC because the coach had told my son he would request he be sent to GMC so we had assumed (yeah I know) that he would go to GMC but when the assignment came out he got Marion.
They told my son criteria in deciding is 1. Academics, 2. Student support?? and 3. Athletics/EC's.

Congratulations.

My son is finishing up his CGAS year at GMC. This was the first year the Coast Guard has used GMC as "the other prep school". Previously some athletes were sent to New Mexico Military Academy or Marion. The Coast Guard wanted to have both of the prep schools closer together. As for GMC, my son has had a very positive experience there over the year. He is a football player and had a fun time playing for the Bulldogs. The football program is very high end. Most of the other players are there to obtain better grades and go on to Division 1 and Sub division programs. Academically the program appears sound. My son has reported that he has been challenged quite well and feels his prep year was a great choice before entering the academy.

If you have any other questions feel free to pm me.

Tim

Thanks for your response. I have shared this with my daughter. She is very excited about attending GMC.

DS is a recruited athlete and was told to get ready for GMC. Somewhat surprised when assignment came for MMI. In the end it doesn't matter where he goes because it gets him one step closer to an appointment next year!

Quick update: DS received call last week that his assignment was being changed to GMC. It is my understanding that several people were changed.
