Scholarship award presentation

Great ceremony Thursday night. Army Captain presented the 4 year scholarship to my DS. He did a great job. BIG CHECK and all. Gasps then cheers from all around the auditorium. Very proud. Very grateful.

Nice BigBIllNY, and Falcon A. Congratulations all!

Son’s school knew little to nothing about ROTC and he did everything on his own to get AROTC scholarship. When he finally told head guidance counselor he was going to top private college on scholarship she was shocked. She advised him this week she had looked into it and set up presentation for Senior Awards night. He is pretty low key, told no one, and from this forum I knew army might be a “no show” for award. So he was prepared when they did not appear. American Legion representative was present, and had award for son, academy appointee, and two seniors enlisting. He received several additional senior awards so it all worked out. Wife was even more shocked school said nothing about the service academy appointee.

This past Monday was our DS' senior awards night. Nearly 100 students received awards from various local organizations and some of the awards were as high as $10k. Well, a Lt. Col from a nearby school was kind enough to take the time to attend and present my son with a certificate for winning a 3yr AROTC scholarship. He offered a variation on the speech above, indicated my son would be attending RPI, and that the scholarship was valued at approximately $150k. There was a slight silence, followed by a whistle or two, and then thunderous applause. The pollen count must have been high in the gym that night, because I was a little teary eyed.

My DS will be at RPI this year......NROTC.... I'm pretty sure that they'll be running into one another there. :)

DS was presented a nicely framed certificate by an ROTC representative from, I believe NC State ( could be wrong, it was a bit emotional for this mom. I will have to refer to the video tape). He presented to my son and the two other 3 year winners from our school. There were some gasps when he said the values of DS (VMI) and the cadet attending Citadel.

The ROO from my school, as well as my JROTC Senior Instructor and a family friend whom is the local NG Recruiter, all presented it to me during senior awards yesterday. Since then, I've been congratulated countless times by innumerous parents, friends, and acquaintances. Part of me is kinda saddened, though, that my fellow classmates didn't get a segment for their own awards, especially considering there were a half-dozen seniors in my school that got full-blown full rides to their schools!
