Hello,

I am a contracted MS3 scholarship cadet with a 4 year national scholarship. For personal reasons, I am considering leaving ROTC.

What is the dis-enrollment process like for scholarship cadets? I understand that a vague explanation is either pay back the scholarship or be given a service obligation.

But I am looking for more detail; How likely am I to be given the option to pay back the scholarship over a service obligation? Will I be able to negotiate installments?

In my research, AR145-1, Para 34-a (https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/pdf/web/r145_1.pdf) states the 4 year scholarship cadets can only voluntarily be disenrolled during their MS1 year. Is disenrollment even an option for me at this point?

I am refraining from asking my ROO about this situation because this is only an idea I am considering. I do not want to open a can of worms by having this conversation with my cadre

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Start with reading the contract you signed.

The Army has invested money in you, and if they are not going to get their requirement of a new 2LT to fulfill Army officer manpower needs, they will want money or time from you.

Use either the Search function inside SAF or a google search with “site:www.serviceacademyforums.com” with your other search terms. There are several threads on ROTC disenrollment.

Withdraw from MS classes. That places you in breach of contract. Waive the right to a board (its voluntary) and request either to enlist for 3 years or pay it back— this is all in your contract. Then once the disenrollment is complete (4-6 months) you’ll have the option to send a check or make a payment plan.

you have to volunteer to enlist vs payback. So they wont force you to.
