My son will be attending the academy and playing football, but i wanted to know if we should apply for any other funding or scholies available? Not sure if his pay will cover everything so if you could let me know, before it gets to late, that would be greatly appreciated.

my ALO told me that if you get appointed, the academy pays for pretty much everything- even transportation to I-day. money definitely won't be a problem, but having some extra cash might have its benefits at the academy (i.e. being able to earn pilot's licenses). BTW, i didnt know scholarships would give you money unless it was for tuition alone- and the academy charges zero dollars for tution :)

Yor son will actually have to file next yr a 1040 because he will be earning money. Every cadet is charged 6500 and deducted form their LES that amt. until it is paid. I am nnot positive if you are asking should we send spending money or if you are concerned that it is a free ride

If it is the latter, than the answer is no, since we will have active duty time owed with his committment. If it is the first, of course sending him $$$$ every month will make him happy:shake:

BEST PART OF THE AF IS EVERY PCS THEY ALLOW YOU TO TAKE A 0% LOAN OVER 12 MOS.

With that all in mind, us 3 digs just received our held pay. People that had scholarships that were paid into their accounts as USAFA were able to get them. So instead of about 800 dollars, some people got a couple grand from their scholarships. If he wants to put in the effort for extra money, it may be worth it. Keep in mind though, that someone who might really need may not get it then.

Our son received a scholarship from one of my employers. The check is sent to the Academy each semester, and is put into our son's held pay account. It is in effect paying off his $6500 loan early, and then it will increase his held pay when he recieves it. He will not have access to the money before that.
The scholarship program did reduce his award from $5000/yr to $1000/yr because of the school that he chose. The application process began before he knew for sure that he would get into USAFA, so he listed a couple other schools as choices on the application, also. If he would have chosen those schools, he would have gotten the full $5000.

I think it really depends on the scholarship program that you are applying to whether it is worth pursuing or not. Ask about it when he applies for the scholarship.

that's a good point

I wouldn't worry too much about that though, since so many scholarships go unclaimed each year for lack of applicants.

Actually it is the right thing to do. daughter recieved appointment to west point in Dec, Full ride So Cal Navy Rotc, and was expected to recieve her USNA appointment anyday. She wanted USAFA and as soon as they offered withdrew from all others. There were people waiting for the NROTC scholarship, and it freed up the slot she was committed against. Becuase her USAFA appointment came in early January, someone from both West Point and Annapollis surely got moved up the list. Her civilian money will be available for other to use too. Most of the schlarships expressly denied the money if you accepted an Academy Appointment, although many like Hornet get the benefit they earned.

Daughters boyfriend attends Embry Riddle using scholarships and loans. Couldn't get him to consider ROTC. He will be paying for this long into adulthood, and every scholrship dollar helps.

I didn't receive any scholarship money. ;) Didn't apply for any.

Though my opinion may seem a little extreme, I think that if you qualify for a scholarship, you should apply for it. Sure, you're taking it away from someone else; that's the case with every application. If you have worked hard enough to earn the qualifications necessary for a scholarship, GO FOR IT! It's up to the scholarship committee to decide who will and will not receive the money.

Now when it comes to applying for ROTC scholarships, if you have an appointment, there is no need to hold another full-ride scholarship. By holding it, you're simply making someone else wait longer for theirs, and who likes waiting?

However, if you can utilize the scholarship when it is awarded, then take it!!! You DESERVE it!

You're going to an institution that is paying for your entire education, and paying you to do it as well. How do you think the guy whose parents can't help him with college and can't even pay for community college without help feels when he was 2nd best to you, but you take the spending money and run?

I agree. My dad is pressuring me to apply for all these scholarships, but I've already been accepted to the Academy...so why should I take money that I don't need and some one else does need. The Academy pays for everything. It would be a lot more helpful to some one else.

Well, you have a point, but . . . what happens if you tear your ACL before summer? Or a million other things that make you not able to go (or not want to go)? Even a car wreck that is not your fault can break some bones and get you a DQ. I suggest that you go ahead and apply for the scholarships and if you do not feel comfortable taking them, you can turn them down (or return them).

You just never know what is going to happen.

There are expenses in the beginning - the deposit, the boots - that can be a burden. Even a small scholarship will be a help. Last year, USMA required a deposit of $2900. USAFA may request a similar deposit. Also, the first year is when many of the uniform expenses are deducted from your salary - your paycheck is very small. Wouldn't it be nice to have a scholarship to help defray those expenses?

Honestly, even with a small pay check, I didn't spend much at all as a freshman. Didn't need to, and most things I would have wanted I couldn't have anyways.

That's why i asked the question

Hornetguy, When I started this thread it was because I didn't know what the proper procedure was, so I don't need to be chastised for taking some less fortunate's money! Of course no one wants more on their plate than they can eat, but like the poster said, you never know what can happen. That in fact was the question, does he need any additional funds to cover other expenses not expected, or is everything covered by his pay.

As a c4c I will be recieving about $100+ a month for allowance. Whether that is true or not... but I know that my plans for that money if possible is to save for the slopes. It just isn't fair if my scholarship money is going towards snowboarding versus college expenses other students have. I am also not planning on getting hurt... but I have a full ride to USU on academics. I'm not that worried about it.

This doesn't sound like a procedral question to me.

Looks to me more like a case of you not liking the answers given. And a whole lot of othr people would give you the same answer they have.

falconfather- I'm hardly chastising you. I'm offering my personal opinion to others on here about scholarships. This place is based on sacrifice for one's country. Taking a scholarship for spending money or similar reasons is contrary to the idea of personal sacrifice here as well. Don't take offense to what I say, I am merely offering another perspective on the matter.....

I turned down a NROTC scholarship a couple weeks ago and I just faxed in my rejection of my AFROTC scholarship, although I first thought to look out for myself, it is clearly stated in the appointee booklet to turn down all ROTC scholarships right away... I feel that now it has come form an official source than it is the right thing to do, there is however no rule against using a private scholarship at the academy, its all really a matter of personal opinion...

Besides, who really wants to go through more of an application process when this is the time to relax and prepare for BCT??? Just my opinion though...
