background: DS is still waiting to see if he is offered an appointment. He got notified that he won a scholarship through my husband's employer. I have read some older threads regarding scholarship use at USAFA, but would like a little more information please.

The only thing he needs to do is provide a Student Accounts invoice for the Fall semester and again for the Spring semester. Check cut to him and school each semester. I have read about the fees for computer, software, linens, haircuts, laundry, etc that are assessed incoming new cadets and the money loaned up front to cadet to pay these expenses. I read that normally that loan is paid back over two years. Is there a way to get an invoice for upfront charges assessed at the beginning of the first year? Are there such upfront charges assessed each semester or only at beginning of the academic year? Are there charges assessed at the beginning of each academic year? Can anyone share how much these have been recently? Are there any charges assessed monthly to their accounts - the account that gets satisfied with deductions from the monthly stipend?

My son has one week to respond to the scholarship coordinator regarding the award, but always better to have info needed to have an educated conversation with them. Of course, we hope an appointment comes through before then, but in any event the info could help someone else.
Thanks!

My DD has also applied for a scholarship through my company. Final decisions will not me made until May. However, if you can speak with the scholarship coordinator, as I did, they can tell you, with the restrictions of the Academy, whether you can still use the scholarship. If so, as is true with my company, once awarded, you and they can coordinate with the Academy for to whom it is made and when. If you read the Instructions to Appointees, it tells you that scholarships can be accepted as long as it does not have certain restrictions. The amount of the scholarship will go against the "debt" the cadet incur for the uniforms, books, computers, etc. Thus, reducing the amount withheld from their paychecks each month.

Talk to the scholarship program coordinator for your husband's company and the Academy.

Since he is not received an appointment yet I don't have access to that instructions to appointee information. I just didn't know if there's a way or anyone knows if there's a way you get an invoice at the beginning of the academic year? And whether they do semester "billings" or only at the beginning of the year? And I was hoping someone would have some information as to what that amount is for incoming cadets and what amounts are billed the following years?

Thank you for the reply it is chock-full of information.

Unlike a normal college, there are no monthly billings. Anything the cadet has to pay will be taken out of their paycheck over the time they are at the Academy, mostly during the first two years. Essentially, for scholarships, as long as they are not "tuition and fees only" and/or tied specifically to the GPA, they can be used.

You're best bet is to talk with the company scholarship coordinator, and give them the "what if" he is accepted to the Academy. That is what I did. if it is your husband's company, probably best he call them. The coordinator or program director for the scholarship company responsible for our company was very helpful.

Looks like USAFA does publish a "budget" periodically.

Read section 5. I don't recall appointees getting any additional info beyond what is contained in the AFI referenced above.

In my opinion, I doubt you'll be able to get a bill up front.

Each cadet will get a monthly pay statement. You might ask your company if you could provide copies of these statements at the *end* of the semester and be reimbursed. These statements will show cadet pay, but that is "earned income" and is reported as W-2 income. It would be like being paid for a part-time job at a normal university.

As Capri said, the check is made out to the U S Treasury with your cadet's name and ssn identified. It will go into his account and will become part of his balance. The check will not be returned if he drops out or leaves for any reason. There can be no restrictions placed on the money. Hope he hears about an appointment soon.

This is great information! Thank you for the links. I'm on it right now! Thank you for the well wishes as well. Fingers crossed.
