Scholarship Upgrade

I'm not sure about the citadel or vmi but for my battalion, if you come in with a 3-year national scholarship, you can get it upgraded to a 3.5 year by passing your PT test and doing well in your classes. Of course, you also have to show you are a motivated cadet that is worth the upgrade. As a disclaimer, our battalion is much much smaller than the citadel and vmi so that could play a role as well.

Thank you, can you also get an upgrade of your national 3 to a 4?

Take a look at (last year’s?) ROTC posts after the 3rd board. Several posters mentioned their 3rd changed to a 4th. I’m imagining that happens when winners get a SA appointment decide to go that route, thereby releasing the 4-yr back in the pool.

Things change and every year is different with this process. Scholarship money is getting tight this year, and you shouldn’t count on any upgrades. There will probably be a few that get pulled up from a 3 to a 4 after the last board, and it will also depend on what battalion and brigade you received your offer to. Hope for the best, but plan on paying for that first year.

Also, make sure the school knows you have the 3 year scholarship offer. That will allow them to possibly front load any financial aid you may be offered.

Appreciate all your input on this forum.

Is there any data (or anecdotal observations) regarding how many of those enrolling with a 3y offer actually activate it the 2nd year?

Or, put another way, what is the dropout/cut rate after freshman year for 4- vs 3-yr winners?

I accepted my 4-year from the 1st board to the Citadel, there is a possibility of turning over my scholarship later this year since I am trying very hard to be appointed to the USMA or prep school. I met a few others going to the Citadel with the same situation. So, I mean, if you go there, it is possible that one of us would turn our scholarships down.
