A buddy of mine mentioned that I would have a really tough time receiving a scholarship because I am not enrolled in JROTC with my highs school. Is that true?

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

For 2018 Army ROTC, 75% of award recipients had ZERO JROTC background.

Here is the National profile of Army ROTC awardees from the University of North Georgia AROTC website:
Army Cadet Command looks at three areas of performance in what they term Scholar/Athlete/Leader (SAL) criteria.

The more extensive your leadership record in these activities, the better your chances. The Cadet Command selection board makes decisions based on the strength of your application compared to the applicant pool. The profile for the 2018 academic year nation-wide recipients:

95% were in the top 50% of their classes in academics (71% were in the top 25%)
26% were class officers
79% earned varsity sports letters
63% were varsity team sports captains
25% were in JROTC
19% were club presidents
3.7 average GPA
1321 math + critical reading SAT

Tell your buddy to parse his source data more carefully.

No. Bring good grades, good test scores, good leadership activities, other marks of a well-rounded, fit, capable individual, and you will get your shot the same as anyone else. Participation in JROTC programs is just one of many things you can bring to the table.

Not necessarily. Depends on how the rest of your application package stacks up. Maybe your academics, test scores, fitness stats, leadership examples and essays are so brilliant that you don’t need JROTC to prop up your resume.

At which point you can tell your buddy: “JROTC? I don’t need no stinking JROTC!” (Apologies if that ‘80s cinema reference is lost on you.)

Close up the thread, this discussion can end with the above post.

My son was not JROTC and he received a 3 year AROTC scholarship and was upgraded to a 3.5 year based on performance. Apply, don’t listen to nay sayers. Read from those above. One thing is for sure, you have zero chance if you don’t apply

My DS got an AFROTC type 2 scholarship. Our HS had AF JROTC. He was not in AF JROTC. He was also the ONLY HS senior to get an AFROTC scholarship, although 7 AF JROTC (seniors) students applied for the scholarship.
~ Talk of the senior award night on how this kid that didn't do JROTC got a 4 yr scholarship.
~ He also was the only student at his HS to get MoC nominations for USAFA. He got all 3 MoCs.

There is a lot more to the scholarship and SA appointments than just being in JROTC.

Hate to burst your bubble but that quote this alludes to originally comes from Treasure of the Sierra Madre in 1948, starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, and Tim Holt. It was directed by John Huston who had a cameo. The original quote is actually "Badges! We don't need no stinking badges!" I remember watching it when it first came out! :DCost me 15 cents to get in the theater. I still had 10 cents left for popcorn.

Like many Bogart movies it has lines which still live in our culture, many of them from Casablanca.

Hat tip to kinnem. As a child of the 1980s, I tend to believe everything originated then. I think I mistakenly placed it in the classic, “Blazing Saddles,” which birthed its own set of memorable lines. My “JROTC” version does lack the rhythm and indignation of the original “badges” line.
