Schools that are already "full"

Oswego, NY? Or somewhere more inviting?

Hey! Oswego is a nice town. The SUNY campus has a nice hockey rink as well. Unfortunately, last I checked it's AROTC situation requires driving to Syracuse...

None of the Marist College Army ROTC Scholarship allocations have been used so all are still available for the JAN Board. If you want to combine ROTC with a degree in Criminal Justice, History, Information Technology, or Political Science, you should consider Marist College.

If you receive the 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship, Marist College will give you free room and board. If you do not get the 4 year ROTC Scholarship, Marist College will give you $2000 off tuition each year.

Most Cadets that do not get the ROTC Scholarship from the national boards will receive an on campus scholarship. We will begin next semester with 83% of our Cadets on full tuition ROTC Scholarships.

PM me if you are interested in applying to Marist College. I can help guide you through the process.

Marist any idea why none of them have been used? Is it reflective of a smaller applicant pool, or maybe that right now nobody requesting Marist has been awarded?

I think it has more to do with where Marist fits in on the academic pyramid. Marist is not on the same level as the service academies or the very best private schools.

Students that want Harvard and MIT will rarely even list Marist as a safety school. Students that are an academic fit for a state school or less competitive private school might list Marist as their "reach".

We tend to receive the bulk of our scholarships from the JAN board as students receive rejection letters and then reconfigure their choices on the list of schools on their ROTC Scholarship application.

Curious, since we are at the edge of the fiscal cliff, and last yr I believe you said they dropped the number offered from the previous yr. Do you know if they are dropping again this yr., or are they remaining at the same level?

There does not appear to be any drop off from last year.

Despite the fact that our number of national board scholarships dropped last year, our overall number of scholarships increased. At Marist College we managed to get On Campus Scholarships for EVERY elligble Cadet.

We are a low cost school within our battalion. X number of $ can be used to provide 3 scholarships at School A or 5 scholarships at Marist College.

I hope AROTC candidates are reading this thread because it seems to good to be true from a fiscal perspective paying for college and wanting the Army.

Is it you or clarkson that also had the sweet deal to Hawaii for cadets over spring break? A deal that I have never seen offered by AFROTC!

There is ROTC....and then there's Marist ROTC.

Nrotc tamu

My DS is a freshmen at a HS JROTC. He expects at least a 3.5 GPA when he graduates (tough curriculum). His first choice is service academy but he is enamored with the Citadel. We just returned from VMI and after USNA, VMI now is choice 2. Recently he is looking into TAMU's NROTC and although we have not visited Petroleum Engineering which is Tier 2 NROTC Scholarship appeals to him.

He is getting 32's in practice ACTs with 31 math, 34 english and a 35 on one science ACT and 31 on the other and 88 percentile on EXPLORE with 85th percentile in math and science.

He is doing a STEM at Georgia Tech this summer followed by a 21 day Arabic immersion. Here is my question: Should he not get into USNA and get NROTC scholarship. What should his plan be? He thinks he may like BOTH petro engineering AND Arabic language track in pursuit of LREA track (Arabic language and history expert) and may want military intell after SWO or Subs. He is doing Intelligence and National Security course this summer at American University. TAMU only has minors in Arabic. Is there a NROTC with an Arabic major. In addition, is it worth the chance of applying for language if only 15 percent get it. He will be taking 2 yrs of HS French followed by 2 yrs of Arabic.

Being good at math and science should he just forget Arabic track? I've heard the Navy is trying to entice officers into LREA track and promotions to 0-5 and 0-6 are becoming more prevalent.

Sorry to cram so much in there.

Although a long term goal is great, but I think @25 yrs into the future is a little too long.

I've heard the Navy is trying to entice officers into LREA track and promotions to 0-5 and 0-6 are becoming more prevalent.

3 yrs left in HS, 4-5 yrs in college, 15/16 yrs to O5 = 22-24 yrs from today. I think if you asked any O5 what the Navy looked like when they entered NROTC/USNA at age 18, they would say a whole lot different.

I.E. Arabic studies might be what was really needed 10-15 yrs ago for new commissioned officers, hence the faster promotion rate now, just as Russian was 25 yrs ago. I would think Chinese is going to be the next language where the demand will exist.

There are going to be many hurdles to clear for the next 7-8 yrs just to commission.

Have him major in a degree he will enjoy. A happy mid is a successful mid.

+1
Agree, There is no way to look that far into the future and have any certainty at all as to what will be needed or what your son will want at that point in his life. He needs to pick what he is interested in and always remain flexible to opportunities that arise. Very few stay on a pre-charted course.

Can you please explain to me the "wait list" issues at the ROTC detachments?
Reading from the beginning of this thread that started early in the fall when scholarships were first being rewarded, how were the detachments already full (or is it just that simple, that the favorite schools fill immediately?)
How do you stay out of the issue of your school being full, again, is it as simple as having a strong application and being awarded a scholarship with your choice during the first board?

Thanks!

I think you hit the nail on the head, it's just that simple, the most popular school often fill their quotas earlt, sometimes on the first board.

As the OP mentioned, it's possible to be awarded a scholarship to a school you did not apply too then be placed on the wait list at your choice schools. As time passes some applicants may decline their scholarships to certain schools in turn moving you up the list. There are also many applicants that accept their scholarship while waiting to hear about an appointment to a SA. If the appointment comes through then they often decline the scholarship, although it sometimes happens that a SA appointee will hold on to their scholarship as a safety net up to the day they report the the SA then decline the scholarship. This all means that it is possible that a spot may open up to one of your choice schools at a much later date.

You could have a very strong application and they are just waiting to see if a slot opens up at one of your choice schools before they offer a scholarship, or as it is mentioned before a scholarship may be awarded to a school not on the applicant's list.

All of this can cause issues since it may be past the day you are required to accept admission to your school before you find out if you have cleared a wait list. There have been applicants that have paid deposits for school just in case they make it off the wait list.

The best thing someone on a wait list can do is keep in contact with the ROTC unit to see how the wait list is moving, try to gauge your chances as time goes on.

Give that man a Kewpee doll. I think you have it!

My DS was lucky enough to be awarded an ROTC scholarship. His best friend, who has encouraged and fostered DS's interest in ROTC and SAs, is waiting on the results of the March board. This kid is an exceptional leader and role model but I don't think his grades are as high as some scholarship awardees. He has been accepted to Norwich. Any ideas if that school is one where scholarships may already be full???

I'm also a bit confused by this thread. Daughter was notified she had received a Type 1, but there is no mention of limitation on schools. It says she can use it ANYWHERE she gets accepted, though it does require a technical major.
