Good Morning All

My daughter just received an invitation to attend the USCGA's 2008 STEP program and I'm just wondering if anyone here might be able to elaborate on this program......kvh

Congratulations, STEP is a one-day on-campus visit program held once in the fall & once in the spring for HIGHLY qualified female prospects.

It's a 6-hour on-site visit held on Friday afternoon, that combines classroom academics with an Academy orientation. You'll have access to other women cadets in STEM majors, faculty, and Admissions staff members. There are a couple of "hands-on" workshops, a campus tour, lunch, and a Q & A session as well. Parents are welcome.

Increasing the enrollment of cadets in STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) majors, and graduating at least 70% with STEM degrees is major goal of the USCGA Admissions department.

I would recommend it highly.

Luigi - So receiving an application is indicative of the applicants competitiveness or is it actually simply an invite sent to the mailing list? Thanks.

My daughter and I attended STEP in 2006. We had a terrific time and any young women who are interested in science or engineering and the CGA should take advantage of the offer.

They had special workshops for the kids while the parents had a tour and q & a session. While my daughter loved CGA and her day there, she ended up losing interest in CGA (to my disappointment) and never finished her application - she is a cadet at West Point. I don't recall if the invitation back then was competitive or not - they may have targeted young women who indicated an interest in science and engineering on the initial application.

2006 was the first year the program was offered so it may have changed a bit but here is a thread with some descriptions of the day:

It's an invite sent to the female mailing list who have expressed an interest in STEM majors at the academy.

When I posted the words "Highly qualified" I was mistakenly combining the invitation-only Cadet For A Day program with the other campus visitation events such as S.T.E.P., which any female can attend without meeting any prior requirements other than registration.

Sorry for the confusion.

Not long ago, my daughter tried to register for this program under the same assumption, but was told by her admissions officer that due to the great success and popularity of the program........ 2008 would be by invitation only.......much to her dissapointment as she did not make AIM.:frown:

However, all is good now:thumb: We can't wait to see New London.

JAM....that was a great link.....thanks.....I will try to add our experience after STEP 2008.......kvh

That's great news for your daughter. New London and the Academy campus is beautiful this time of year.

Hi everyone, I too was invited to the STEP program, however I listed Government as my intended major. In addition, I have no real interest in the Science/Technology majors. I am very interested in attending the Coast Guard Academy but I don't know if I should attend the STEP program . I only live about 2.5 hours away so that is not really an issue but I don't know if it is worth it for me to go. Any opinions? Also, can anyone give me some insight into the interview process. I e-mailed my Coast Guard Academy Rep. but he has not gotten the chance to get back to me yet. Can anyone offer their experiences with the interviews? Thanks!

Yes by all means take advantage of this opportunity, no matter what your intended major is...my son listed civil engineering on his app, but wisely changed over to Government and is now about to graduate with about 30% of his class in Gov.

BTW L59 you are a master at cutting and pasting info from the AAP site...HA HA HA :thumb:

Thanks for the advice! I just registered and i will update you on how it went. I am really looking forward to the experience. Also I e-mailed my Coast Guard Rep earlier this week and have still not received a reply (about an interview). I am applying early action and want the admissions officers to take my interview into consideration when they are reviewing my application. Any suggestions?

if you received notification and attended Cadet for a Day, could this mean your chances are good?
