Hi, so I am a high school freshman and was thinking of joining Sea Cadets and also would ultimately like to attend USMA. I was wondering if that would make a positive impact on my transcript or if it would be a non factor. Thanks for any help.

Its worth points on the application plus is a good way to gain leadership. It also gives you something to write about on the application. But that should not be the reason you join Sea Cadets. Joining Sea Cadets will give you an idea of what the military is like. You will be able to interact with active duty and enlisted personnel. The summer training opportunities are amazing. If you join take advantage of every opportunity not because it will improve your application but because it will make you a better future officer. Most Sea Cadet units will let you observe for a weekend. Try it out and see if it is for you.

OK thanks for the help!

NotCollege is spot on.

Don't do anything just because "it will look good". Choose activities that you enjoy because if you enjoy them you will be more successful at them.

Three of my kids are/were in Sea Cadets (one has graduated). It is a fantastic program. My daughter who has graduated from the program is now at an SMC and has been awarded a Marine scholarship. She attributes Sea Cadets with helping her tremendously, both for the scholarship and for a successful first semester at a very difficult military college.

I am not sure about USMA, but I believe that roughly 12% of 2020 USNA Plebes were former Sea Cadets - a significant number!

Edit: If you have any questions about the program, I would be happy to answer them!

Thanks! I have multiple friends in it and they've been telling me about how good it is!
