Sea Trials and 2/C Cruise

So do these orders come by email, I assume? Hoping we aren’t waiting on postal mail :).
I think it depends on unit...DS received via FedEx with orders and medical records that he needed to keep with him then send back to unit upon return.

haha! it should be interesting, as my DD only received her outgoing flight into for tomorrow am, but did not receive info yet on her return! That and she is still awaiting a needed uniform- which they claim will be mailed to her at her destination.

as aside, I also heard that due to budgeting both sea trials slated for jacksonville were cancelled. Apparently, there is consensus in the navy that more training is needed, in my opinion, after the recent spate of incidents at sea, but the money is not in the budget to train them.
Oh, that is interesting. DS had requested the early session that was to start May 4 in Jacksonville. He wasn't sure what happened to that request, only that he wasn't going. He is disappointed not to have any cruise this summer, but is looking forward to his internship, which will be in Bethesda, MD.

If it was cancelled, wouldn't he get slated for the Newport sea trials? I know my DD is going there at the end of june.
And my DS is slated Newport in July.

I'm not sure how many sessions there are, but it sounds like there is one session that doesn't conflict with his internship and it is full. Makes sense that if they are cancelling multiple sessions in Jacksonville, there wouldn't be room for everyone to attend. DS was told they only had capacity for about 70% to attend. The cancellations may be the reason for that.

Navy is down $5 million dollars in budget this year. The 4 of us contracted sophomores were all suppose to go to sea trials this summer. Only 3 of us got slots, and the other midshipmen (we put our names in a random generator to see who would be the odd one out for sea trials this summer) has to go on a 2/c cruise. Since sea trials is mandatory in order to commission now, he'll have to double up on 1/c cruise, and sea trials, as well as the other midshipmen who pick up a contract over this summer. This means juniors next year get first dibs on sea trials, and sophomores can expect that some of them will still be left out.

I am headed to Newport, but wanted Jacksonville. Jacksonville is currently backlogged with 90 midshipmen over the amount that can be taken.

All of this is expected though with the implementations of these new trainings (NSI and sea trials) that the Navy is making mandatory now for midshipmen.

We will see what happens next summer, but DS said the 1/C cruise is still the only truly mandatory cruise. I would think that if they were making sea trials truly mandatory for the rising 2/C, the Navy would have ensured there was space for all this year. By having rising 1/C double up next year they just keep going with the same issue of not enough billets to go around. But this is just my best guess based on what DS has shared and deduction. Time will tell.

From what I have heard, though I could be wrong, the reason why Sea Trials got all messed up this year was more bad timing of "requiring" sea trials and 2/c at the same time, rather than a funding issue. To clarify, there was funding in the overall budget, but trying to find the money at such a last minute in conjunction with paying for implementing NSI which the navy saw as more of a necessity than sea trials, was the hard part. Next year they seem to be confident that they will be sending ALL 2/c MIDN to sea trials when they have more time to plan the budget accurately. Whether they make this as "mandatory" as 1/c cruise remains to be seen.
