Sea Trials and 2/C Cruise

Nah, it’s a U-required class (like anthropology), not a Navy or major req’d course. He’s working it on his end like yours.... just looking for creative solutions. I’m sure there’s a prof who will be flexible with him, and/or maybe we’ll get lucky and be able to have him home for a few weeks this summer!! Thank you ProudDad17 and Momx3 for the helpful suggestions!

Not sure if your ds is squared away for the summer with dates. etc. After a stressful 2 days, my DD was able to get her 2/c training dates moved to accommodate her summer class at home, just have a time crunch on the front end, going from final exam, move out of dorm that day, pack sea bag and leave for training the next day. Phew! Thankfully she already received approval to take the summer class from her school, so the credit will transfer. but that took a really long time!

Again, good to hear how it works out. Sorry there’s not two days of pure rest between exams and the next event for your DD! Good thing they’re young!

We don’t yet have summer training dates. Far from being squared away and getting used to the feeling. Am planning on being there for move out to either throw everything in storage as I wave goodbye to him leaving for training, move him into summer housing for a summer class before training, or bring him home for a class here or online. At least I know where *i* will be!! :)

DS found online, self-paced class he will take while doing seatrail/2c cruise. There's a start and complete date, but in between he can pick when he works on the class. It's a gen ed course - needed for graduation, but not his major. It's at the university he attends.

Hopefully that will work for him, but it looks like they will be quite busy during sea trials and I'm not sure how much down time they will have. I searched NROTC sea trials on YouTube a couple weeks ago after my DS was telling me about it from what he was told. Hopefully your DS has talked to someone who went last year and found out about downtime. Unless he has time before or after seat trials to work on the class.

That's the great thing of self-paced, he has all summer to complete it - so he will do it when he's not at seatrial or summer cruise.

From what I understand still a lot of confusion regarding Sea Trials and the 2/C Cruise. My DS got his Sea Trial dates and they will allow him to study abroad in early summer. His LT told him not to worry about abroad...they have the dates and if the 2/C Cruise waiver doesn't go through he may have a shorter cruise in August after he gets back from London and Sea Trials. The unknowns are brutal.

Yup! a whole lot of unknowns! My DD still awaits her travel orders, even though she is due to leave in a week! I don't recall which is which, but know that she has one of them for 3 weeks in May, and then goes to Newport at the end of June for a couple of weeks. Good luck to your son- hope it works out!

ya'll are making this new mom's head spin... :wiggle:
holy moly that's a lot of information {bookmarking for future/memory and because DS was also born OPSEC}

The saga continues. Hot off the press, as of this morning. So my DS is studying abroad May thru end of June...approved by his Unit. His Sea Trial dates are July 13 thru 23rd...and he was put in for Phase 3 2/C cruise July 22 thru Aug 14th...so there's some overlap. He just told me this morning that depending on how this works out he may have to do both Sea Trials and Cruise or he may have to do one or the other. But he did tell me that Sea Trials are no longer mandatory this year...I mentioned that I found it hard to believe they would not keep Sea Trials as mandatory and he mentioned Navy budget and sending 2/C' s to two separate events this summer....that's what I heard...dont know if accurate...wondering if anyone has heard similar.

I got similar info from my DS this weekend. He requested the first rotation of Sea Trials, which begins May 4, but for whatever reason did not get into that session. He has an internship that end 4-5 days after the final phase for the 2/C cruise, so his unit isn't even requesting a cruise for him and he was told the second rotation of Sea Trials is full, so, as of now, he will not be attending Sea Trials or the traditional 2/C cruise. He was told the Navy only has capacity for about 70% of mids for Sea Trials, so it sounds like a good number won't be going.

Wow, that’s really interesting (all of above).
Thx also momx3 ... was beginning to wonder if DS was just doing the mom brush off when he said he hadn’t yet received summer travel itineraries. This is why SAF is so awesome!

As far as itineraries...this is my 6th year experiencing...2 DS...the unit may give your DS an idea of what they requested so you have a reasonable guesstimate of timeframes but nothing is definite until he receives his orders which is often within 1 week to a few days of departure. Had 1 experience where orders literally changed 3x in 1 week...resulting in messed up flights...Had another where orders changed 2x in week. I've learned that the only certainty is uncertainty.

@goirish1: no no, say it ain’t so!
I feel more gray hair coming on...but thx for the warning. I’m now buckled in for the ride, fingers crossed.

I think it depends on unit...DS received via FedEx with orders and medical records that he needed to keep with him then send back to unit upon return.

So to home address I assume? School will be out before we expect to get orders from what I hear. I will ask her to check with people ahead of her in unit. She’s a 4C, so Cortramid. Thx!

So do these orders come by email, I assume? Hoping we aren’t waiting on postal mail :).

haha! it should be interesting, as my DD only received her outgoing flight into for tomorrow am, but did not receive info yet on her return! That and she is still awaiting a needed uniform- which they claim will be mailed to her at her destination.

as aside, I also heard that due to budgeting both sea trials slated for jacksonville were cancelled. Apparently, there is consensus in the navy that more training is needed, in my opinion, after the recent spate of incidents at sea, but the money is not in the budget to train them.

Oh, that is interesting. DS had requested the early session that was to start May 4 in Jacksonville. He wasn't sure what happened to that request, only that he wasn't going. He is disappointed not to have any cruise this summer, but is looking forward to his internship, which will be in Bethesda, MD.

Lived in Bethesda a long time. DC area is awesome fun, especially if you don’t mind a little humidity!

When I read about these kids’ adventures I’m truly impressed with the cool stuff they do and the great places they go!

If it was cancelled, wouldn't he get slated for the Newport sea trials? I know my DD is going there at the end of june.
