Hello all,

I have received an appointment for the United States Naval Academy class of 2026 and am interested in the Drum and Bugle Corps as well as several sports. If I was to participate in the Drum and Bugle Corps for the football season, would I be able to play a team sport in the spring season, or would I need to choose one or the other?

I know some sports such as Rugby have games in the spring, but I wasn't too sure if they were a full-year commitment or practiced in the off-season.

It sucks not being able to participate in every single activity offered at the academy!! But I am looking forward to being involved in whatever way that I can!

D&B is scheduled throughout the entire academic year for practices, concerts, parades (fall and spring), sports event support, etc. It is truly a labor of love to put in the hours with them, but they are a dedicated group.

Your first priority as a mid is to be sat in all graded areas, which is a time management challenge in a pressure cooker you likely have not experienced before. You might take on one extra thing which you enjoy and is good stress relief, and then assess what else you can safely take on. You have 4 years to sample various activities.

I have watched our sponsor mid family go from Glee Club to rugby to Model UN, recruited volleyball varsity athlete to marathon to tri team, and many other combinations, as well those who settle in with one ECA, enjoy their intramural sport and stick with that path.

One of our sponsor plebes this year chose one ECA first semester which was mostly virtual, did well in all graded areas first semester, decided she could handle an athletic ECA as well this semester, which she is really enjoying. They just had a fun weekend away at a competition in a big city.

Focus on plebe summer first, then finding your rhythm in the academic year. You will get briefings, be able to talk with and observe upper class, and do the capacity vs. performance analysis on yourself to determine what you can handle. The goal is staying sat and being high enough in the class to get the service assignment you want, balanced smartly with fun stuff.

I agree. There are a number of threads being started asking about various sport/ECA's at USNA. I doubt anyone really knows how challenging they will find their experience until they actually start the program. This is not your typical college and many find it a challenge just to keep up with all of the required activities/academics/etc. I would initially focus on academics and see how successful you are at keeping up with everything being thrown at you before getting overextended with any number of optional activities.
