Last year’s game at Fenway was about as good as one could ask for, with our Mariners pulling out a win in the final minute. Now the game moves to D.C., with the Mariners as the home team. See the post below for details and ticket information.

Now normalize gifting of the Cup to the victor at the White House with both Secretaries present — That would be next level and Full Bore!

Yes. Rather, why does only football have mandatory attendance? Are other sports not worthy? Women's basketball, women's lacrosse, and various swim and dive individuals all are objectively better than football, yet we are forced to support and attend mediocre performers.

My understanding is that plebes typically have to attend whatever sport event is being held at KP their first year. It is good to represent KP, show spirit and to support your fellow Midshipmen regardless. Football teams at every university get a disproportionate amount of attention and resources because it is traditionally the most popular sport that draws the most fans and families to it. My Mid kind of had your attitude about going to Boston but ended up having a blast and a new appreciation for all of it.

So make plebes go and optional for mids. Also, only football is mandatory unless they change it this year. This isnt a p5 school, we are not gaining millions off the football team, and it is not being played at the same level as those schools so not a fair comparison. It's easy to draw families when 100 people are on the roster.

I agree. Football season sucked and TBH the football program eats up a disproportionate amount of resources. It’s D3 football and it’s not even in a particularly competitive D3 conference.

It also dominates the majority of each class. I think the current set of plebes have 50-60 recruits.

That being said - the big SAs all have mandatory attendance to games AND they have to pay for tickets at their own stadium.

I don't think that's the case at Navy. Home games are mandatory for all midshipmen, and the Academy pays for the tickets. I always liked home games, even though we had a dismal team in those days.

Which is why it gets a disproportionate amount of attention than other sports. Sports is the biggest way kids get into the academy, and because football constantly brings in almost 25% of every new class, they use it as a big recruiting venue to get the school out there.

The USNA mids have an automatic payment to cover their "tickets" to the mandatory games.

From the USNA Budget Book:

Naval Academy Athletic Association fee of $288.00 per year for all classes. NAAA is responsible for the physical mission of the Naval Academy. The monthly fee is used to offset the Midshipmen admission cost of all varsity athletic events including the Annual Army-Navy football game.
 
Ok but we are not one of the big academies so what is the precedent? Money seems so tight until its time to bus everyone 4.5 hours and pay to use a venue then its bountiful. Sure the government night save some money, but no way is it cheaper than just having it on campus or not having it be forced attendance at all.

I wonder if that was the case back 30 years ago. I don't recall... (probably should have saved a few of those Midshipman pay statements that one could barely read because they were the carbon copy printed on a dot-matrix printer).

It was definitely a thing in the late 90s as several of my classmates that did not attend games due to other travel obligations petitioned to get reimbursed. Of course it was denied - they were told they purchased their respective "seats" regardless of whether they attended. Some explanation was that NAAA could have otherwise sold the seats that were in the MIDN sections.

Yeah and I’m thinking this is why KP sees so many setbacks. I know my class had a number of football recruits, probably less than 20, and most of them either flunked out or decided KP wasn’t for them.

An asst. coach once cornered me during a PE class and asked me why I wasn’t playing football since, he claimed, KP recruited me and that’s how I was admitted. I really had to bite my lip.

Even if recruited, you owe the coaching staff nothing and its shameful they would act that way. Embarrassing
