Secretary Hegseth

Do you remember Edward Snowden?

The guy who told the world how the US .gov / intelligence community / .mil was spying on everybody electronically or digitally including us American citizens?

Supposedly, the reason he ended up basically defecting to Moscow was because the NDAA allowed for indefinite detention. He was afraid he was going to get “black bagged” and shipped down to GITMO.

Anywhooo…again I guess I didn’t connect all the dots…. The people who are herping and derping NOW about Trump sending military troops into American cities NOW, were the same ones who didn’t raise an eyebrow over Waco and Ruby Ridge.

And since you mentioned parents of prospective Service Academy cadets/mids being troubled, again “that horse dun left the barn” or “that shipped has sailed already”.

Lon Horiuchi, USMA class of 1976.

He shot (sniper’ed) and killed Vicki Weaver while she was holding her 10 month old baby while she stood in the doorway of their Ruby Ridge home. That was in 1992.

You seem to be equating Waco and Ruby Ridge with Trump sending troops to American cities. Not remotely the same. And by sharing the USMA photo of Lon Horiuchi - you seem to be trying to prove that point??

While Lon Horiuchi graduated from USMA, he was a former FBI sniper and was working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, not the military, during the Ruby Ridge incident. Ruby Ridge involved the US Marshalls and the FBI. While the Department Defense loaned requested vehicles and equipment troops were not involved ... because of, wait for it .. the Posse Comitatus Act.

Same with Waco - that was the ATF and the FBI. Again, no active duty personnel participated in direct engagement... Posse Comitatus Act, again. They did provide support in terms of equipment and advice. Texas National Guard participated to some degree under the "war on drugs" exemption because the ATF claimed drugs were present at the compound.

If you need a primer on the basic premise of the Posse Comitatus Act - Enacted in 1878, the PCA (18 U.S.C. § 1385) states active-duty U.S. military forces cannot be used for domestic policing or law enforcement without specific authorization.

So ... we revert to the question:

We should all be troubled by the President's suggestion that our military should direct their lethality on US Citizens. IT IS NOT THE MILITARY'S ROLE TO CONDUCT DOMESTIC LAW ENFORCEMENT.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to understand! There was plenty of outrage in the wake of Waco and Ruby Ridge, and it's not hard to see why. My question is how could anybody on this forum be surprised that parents of future warfighters would be similarly troubled by the President's directing their lethality towards their fellow citizens, in US cities.
As a parent, I don't like any of it. I don't like hurting or killing people, period. It doesn't matter if it's the Japanese (which I had several members who were in WWII) Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, Israeli, Iranian, the list goes on and on, or American. But the reality is, our streets, our cities are plagued by violence and I don't want anyone's children senselessly hurt or killed. I think about Iryna Zarutska. In fact, I can't stop thinking about her. I think about my gaming buddy in Portland with his elderly, health plagued mother who's afraid to leave the house even for dr appointments. I think about our family friends who are Army spouses. I think about another friend who enlisted after 9/11 and had his legs blown off in Afghanistan.

Evil exists. I don't like any of it. But what will you have us do? Watch our cities burn? Lock ourselves inside our homes afraid to go to dr's appointments like my Portlander friend? Wait for missionaries to bring shoeboxes with hygiene products? How's that any better than praying our military kids have had adequate training and resources to do their jobs, be proud of them and pray they come home alive and in one piece?

So you think the president is directing lethality towards citizens?
Well, technically yes, but as always context matters.

So you think the president is directing lethality towards citizens?
I think the president has a long pattern of speaking and acting carelessly and with no great interest in the Constitution. You watched part of the presentation - Hegseth made it clear many times over that lethality is the military's first priority. The president then said he told Pete to use our cities as a training ground for the military. The same military that is trained to "kill people and destroy things." You didn't finish the president's speech, but now that you know what he said, do you think he is directing lethality towards citizens?

No.

Does it really matter if the particular offender has a .gov or a .mil in their email addy?

The result is the same: a person or multiple people (to be specific US citizens on US soil) are dead …deprived of their rights without any sort of due process.

There was a time when then FBI director Robert Mueller was asked in a Congressional hearing if it was A-okay to drone US citizens on US soil. He had to turn around to the lawyers behind him. After some hemming and hawing he finally answered with a “No”. This was in 2013.

That an FBI director has to turn around to ask the FBI’s lawyers on how to respond to that question should send chills down every US citizens spine.

If we ever get to that point and you’re looking at the wrong end of a Hellfire missile is it really going to matter if the drone it was launched from has Air Force markings, the FBI logo, or whatever CIA insignia ( or lack thereof).

As far as Lon Horiuchi sniping an unarmed woman while he was wearing the FBI uniform instead of an Army uniform….are there really parents gleefully excited along the lines of “Oh, goodie! Goodie! Junior is no longer in the Marines. He’s working for the FBI, so he can shoot and kill US citizens willy nilly without any ramifications.” ?

Honor/integrity are things that should be a constant regardless of what uniform you are wearing. Or if you’re not even wearing any uniforms anymore.

Just to be clear…I am pointing out the fake rage people have over Trump and Hegseth trying to bring some semblance of the first world to large cities….while at the same time ignoring the burnt up Branch Davidians that occurred under Clinton’s watch.

For the fake ragers all I have to say is, “Sorry your girl lost.”

I have seen the good director’s name come up in other serious issues recently.

Please allow me the opportunity to have you reconsider your first slight disagreement. I remember a member here who told me he finally found something I posted that he agreed with. I suspect there are more of them. 🤣

Hypothesis 1. If you eat clean, fresh, healthy food that you prepare, that is nutrient-dense - you won’t over eat.

That is what I meant with maybe. Maybe meant for the cases that they aren’t determined to be overeating. Of course that’s the huge problem.

If someone eats 2000 calories of candy everyday, they might be better with 3000 calories of nutrient-dense food.
That's the rub. Most can't/won't/don't eat clean and healthy. My recommendation to those who are struggling with weight is to focus on caloric intake. Ingest less, lose more. Now let's get back to survey results. :)

WARNING: back on topic, kinda

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Big Tobacco bought Big Food.

Think about that for a minute….

An industry known for adding chemicals to make their cigarettes more addictive bought the huge processed food makers (General Mills, Kraft, possibly Nabisco and others).

What could go wrong?

I think the so called experts and social media influencers now call the resulting effects on our brains/bodies as “hyper palatability” .

MAHA!!

Did Kraft foods go around the grocery stores holding guns to people’s heads forcing them to buy their mac and cheese?

No!

Yes!

Maybe?

I haven’t looked at the ingredients list for mac and cheese.

There is a chemical added to other products called maltodextrin. It is higher up on the glycemic index than plain table sugar.

Is maltodextrin addictive?

I don’t know.

what I do know is that Americans getting 55% from highly processed foods (new study came out) cannot be good for your health

This thread is a good example of the division we're seeing across the country right now.

There is a good number of assumingly fairly educated people on this thread who believe that what President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are proposing/doing is completely justified and have their statistics to back it up. There are other assumingly fairly educated people on this thread who believe that these actions are authoritarian and political and have their statistics to back it up. Neither side is willing to budge.

No. I think he is directing Hegseth, with Stephan Miller's advisement, to create photo ops. We have a precedent.

It’s all photo ops.

When Andrew Cuomo was running for governor the first time, he was scheduled to speak at a restaurant in my community.

I get a call from the Mayor. Surprise visit tomorrow. Cuomo wanted people to be outside cheering for him when he walked in. She asked if I could help.

So I rounded up a bunch of tenants and paid them 200 out of my pocket. Nevermind I would never vote for him (though I did vote for Mario).

He showed up with camera crews and filmed it. As payment, I was allowed to go into the speech portion and watch. That was fun - me, a Democrat, in the crowd of democrats that hated me. 🤣

All performative.
