Seeing a therapist - medical repercussions?

Hi All,

So I have recently been seeing a therapist every week to help me get over a rough break up I had with a girlfriend. It’s nothing long-term—I will probably only see the therapist for a total of a month or two. This is simply so I have a professional to talk to—in no way would I be diagnosed with depression or any other long-term mental health issue. However, is seeing a therapist in itself enough of an “issue” to notify the academy or DoDMERB? I am in the process of applying, and I know that once at one of the academies, any sort of mental illness leads to a disqualification from commissioning. Should I be worried about this? Is seeing a therapist something I should notify DoDMERB about even though I have had no history of mental illness and am only seeing him for a short period of time?

Again, I want to stress that I have never had any mental illness nor do I currently suffer from one. I am simply seeing a therapist for counseling after a rough end to a relationship.

Thanks in advance.

Not a reply to your question. I'm just curious also. I never imagined that would or could be an issue. But I really hope it doesn't pose a problem for you.

Be sure that your therapist does not write that you have depression or any mental illness in his OWN notes because you can be stating that you don't have those issues but he/she might think differently. Also if you get prescribed it could be an issue, I don't have much info on this but just common sense, check with your therapist if he has diagnosed you with anything. Anything that is diagnosed could pose a red flag/issue in the future once you disclose this.

First, I would simply request a copy of your therapist's notes and/or ask them if you were diagnosed with any disorders. Keep in mind a diagnoses isn't a career ender. The diagnosis along with the frequency, longevity, and severity also play a factor.

I will certainly ask. On that note, however, I am almost positive I have not been diagnosed with any disorder nor will I be. I am simply seeking the therapist as an outlet for someone to talk to (more like a guidance counselor); I have only met with him once, and I do not plan on meeting with him for more than a few weeks in total.
